The war is over, but the discrimination and repression of Tamils continue

sri_lankan_tamils.jpg

The Australian government says there is no need for people to flee Sri Lanka because it is a democratic country. It also claims that, following the defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in May 2009, Sri Lanka is a “society at peace”.

But the end of the war does not mean the country is at peace. It just means that the violence is now one-sided. The Sri Lankan army still commits acts of violence against the Tamil people, but the Tamils can no longer fight back.

The war began when Tamil youth, angry at the discrimination and repression against their people, took up arms to fight for an independent Tamil state. Now the war is over, but the discrimination and repression continue.

The Tamil areas of the north and east of the island of Sri Lanka are under military occupation. The army has grown in size, despite the end of the war. New military bases have been built. Human rights organisations have documented many cases of Tamils being jailed, tortured, raped and murdered by the army since the end of the war.

Human Rights Watch recently said: “Torture, rape, and ill-treatment in custody by the security forces remain widespread”.

While Tamils have been worst affected by military repression, critics of the government who belong to other ethnic groups have also suffered from arbitrary imprisonment, torture and murder.

Critics are sometimes taken away by the army or police, never to be seen again. One example is the journalist and cartoonist Prageeth Eknaligoda, who disappeared on January 24, 2010. Local residents reported seeing a white van without number plates close to his home around this time.

In recent years there have been growing attacks on Sri Lanka’s Muslim community — and, to a lesser extent, the Christian community — by Sinhalese-Buddhist chauvinists, who are able to act with impunity because of support from the government. Recently four Muslims were killed and ten thousand were made homeless in pogroms initiated by the Bodu Bala Sena (Buddhist Power Force).

It is true that there are multi-party elections in Sri Lanka. But the climate of intimidation means that these elections are not completely free and fair.

There are courageous people in Sri Lanka who continue to defy the government and campaign for human rights, democracy, social justice and the rights of the Tamil people. They deserve our respect and solidarity. But those who flee the repression also deserve our solidarity

BS. If Tamils are leaving Sri Lanka because they were prosecuted and there are acts of violence by SLA, Tamils should naturally flee to India which is just a stone throw away.

But they choose Australia. Does that mean Tamils are prosecuted in India also?

Ten Sri Lankan Tamil refugees, including five children, who arrived illegally by two boats, were arrested at Arichal Munai off Dhanuskodi coast and brought here today, police said.

This is the first time that a batch of refugees are arriving from Sri Lanka after the Lankan forces defeated the LTTE in 2009, officials said.

They were arrested for entering Indian territory without passport, police said.In fact they got down from the boats at the Arichal Munai sand dune and were swimming towards the coast when they were nabbed.

They are being questioned, police said. The refugees told police that they had come from Mullai Theevu after paying Rs 80,000 for each boat.

Ok let's see. 10 arrived in May 2014. How many has gone to Australia for the past 5 years? Don't be an idiot here. Even Australians know why Tamils come to Australia.

The biggest joke is that after you claiming that Tamils are being prosecuted more after the end of the war only 10 have paid Rs. 80,000 for a boat to come to India in May 2014. LOL

I think Australia should deport the Tamil refugees they currently held to Canada, England or USA with full citizenship of those countries as they are more concerned with SL human right record than governing their countries.

they do have relatives who can afford to sponsor them out,

Tamils risk their lives to flee and Tamilnadu coast isn't safe (not even for Tamilnadu fishermen) lucky if they boats are not sunk by genocidal Lankan navy patrol.

Those who can afford, pay for their freedom , those who cant are stuck under Lankan military occupation undergoing torture, rape and arbitrary arrest

Show me one case where that has occurred with proof. Dont show me a news article. I want to see actual proof.

Oh yeah right when your life is threatened you seek where your relatives are and jump into a boat to flee even it is 1000 miles away rather than just going to India which is no more than 32 km away from the shortest point.

I thought many relatives of Sri Lankan Tamils live in Tamilnadu. But it turns out to be Australia. LOL

Yeah right. Tamils can only land at Tamilnadu coast. They cannot go to Andra coast. Besides do you imply that SLN even made Tamilnadu shore vulnerable to the Indian fishermen? I dunno where is IN and Indian coast guard?

Those who can afford, pay for their freedom , those who cant are stuck under Lankan military occupation undergoing torture, rape and arbitrary arrest

What do you think can't afford? just crossing over 32km cost you fortune? How many refugees landed on Indian soil in 80s?

LOL , am I seeking your authentication ? do you know posting disturbing images are not allowed in PDF ?

if you need solid evidence, you need to be adventurous , take a boat (RS 80,000) , cross the Palk straits into Tamilnadu , get your face charcoal black, lie to be Tamil , ( as how you "pretend" to be Pakistani) , to get first hand experience of genocidal Lankan navy's hospitality to Tamils -

So you agree that Tamils are charcoal black? And that Sinhalese are fair.

the fact is the situation in genocidal Lanka is too precarious for minorities that they risk their lives in high sea fleeing 1000s miles using port of exit that are out of genocidal Lankan navy's radar

I thought many relatives of Sri Lankan Tamils live in Tamilnadu. But it turns out to be Australia. LOL

just yours assumption, there are over 1 million Eelam Tamil diaspora

Sri Lankan Tamil refugees are staying in 123 camps located in different spots of Tamil Nadu. There are two camps set up in Orissa for them.

There are 71,600 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees staying in camps as of now. It’s estimated that the total number of Sri Lankan refugees living out side the camp could vary from 20,000 to 100,000

the issue is why people are fleeing genocidal Lanka , so stick to topic and don't let your anti Tamil imaginations go wild

What do you think can't afford? just crossing over 32km cost you fortune? How many refugees landed on Indian soil in 80s?

go ask your neo Nazi regime for the statistic or Google, with internet no reason to remain dumb !
