Democracy is a failure in India ? Okay I can understand that since you are Pakistani.
But democracy is a failure in US and UK ?
What world do you live in ?
Educate yourself. Watch "The Truth about Democracy", and "The War on Democracy", they're amazing documentaries that analyze the effect democracy has had on the world.
Democracy is a failure in the US and UK, and this can logically be proven for a fact. Elections are funded by interest-groups, politicians get on stage and do all this acting, saying all the right things, always eliciting tears from the crowd(I remember how the day Obama became presidento, many people were shown weeping about how it was the best day of their lives). These politicians make all the right promises, push all the right buttons. And the ignorant masses vote for 'em.
But what happens when they get into power? All those elections promises go into the dust-bin. These politicians always support the interest-groups that funded them. The election campaign that got Obama elected, cost BILLIONS of dollars. The interest groups and corporations who foot the bill, don't do so just because they don't know what to do with all that money.
The legislation that these politicians pass, is plainly slanted to favor the wealthy and punish the poor. The financial sector(which made huge campaign contributions) played with people's savings and blew it all up. At a time when the masses in the US(and elsewhere in the world) were being punished for the mistakes of the financial sector(while the people who caused this - heads and CEOs of all these bankrupt companies were caught awarding themselves and friends billions in bonuses), the politicians convince their financial crisis-riddled populace to award these banks TRILLIONS of dollars in bail-out money, selling them on the idea that giving these banks and finance sector corporations tons of money will somehow help the poor.
The banks took the money, refused to even tell where the money went(
» Bernanke: “I Don't Know Which Banks Were Given Half a Trillion" ), and the democratically elected leaders quietly facilitated all this, no consequences.
Democracy is a highly manipulatable system. Politicians are hungry to get into power, and often that requires money, power, influence. Which groups with agendas like corporations are happy to facilitate. And once in power, these politicians help them out. The oil sector and Bush, finance sector and Obama - fabricating reasons and invading Iraq(and continuing the invasion even when the evidence was proven to be doctored), costing 40 LAKH people their lives in Iraq(millions of deaths in Afghanistan as well).
So, the fact of the matter is - it is quiet obvious, that democracies in the west don't function too well either. Much of the world looks on scratching their head, wondering why these countries do so many of the things they do - why all these lies, why war after war after war - all in the name of peace, why backing dictators and mass-murderers in some countries, while claiming to support people's rights. All this is because these wonderful politicians are manipulatable.
The only place democracy seems to work, is in these Scandinavian countries. Because the people are well-informed and vigilant. In America, the music industry pretty much got the Bit Torrent(and other file-sharing methods) banned and sent many people to jail. Over here, a friggin' political party was started when their govt tried to do the same - people surrounded the house of a Member of Parliament trying to push legislation banning people from using these Peer-to-Peer services, and pretty soon the legislation was overturned. When a populace is active like that, even dictators or generals have to behave. When the population is asleep, democracy proves to be useless.
It's only an illusion of choice. In the US, people get sick of democrats and vote for republicans(like Bush got elected). Then people get sick of republicans, and vote in the democrats(like Obama got elected). Regardless of which "choice" you go for, you get screwed. Like voting for PPP or PML-N in Pakistan. Both parties have been democratically elected a number of times, Nawaz Sharif got elected five times. People get nothing. Even in India, the democratically elected government is vulerable to this, it is quiet tempting for these politicians to "oblige" the rich and wealthy, if they can help the politicians back. You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours.
