I think it took India 30 years, to develop their best war plane "LAC Tejas"

Pay money and buy the best military hardware anytime you want.

Its still under development.. and its been more than 40 years..

Pay money and you can buy the best military hardware from USA, Russia, Europe and Israel within few years. Why develop military hardware in the country ??

Thts actually a stupid question... why shouldnt countries be self reliant ... depending on others isnt a good idea.. Pakistan learnt it the hard way.... when u guys sanctioned us.. not just once but several times... even took our F-16s ... same goes for iranian jets.

Z10 will use WZ16 turbo shaft engine with 1500 kilowatt engine output. The engine will be delivered in year 2014, which is a part of joint venture programe between China and France.

Beautiful Engine !!! Looks magnificent clean design

Well Pakistan needs its own Helicopter supply chain

a) Police (Mega cities need helicopters to capture robbers)
b) Border Patrol (Stop terrorist flowing in country undetected)
c) Coast Line Support (Stop narcotics and drugs and people smuggling)

d) Military Needs (Troop support and anti tank operations)

I remember in 80's or late 80's there was debate to why Pakistan does not creates its own helicopter the argument was that we don't need it as we will get these from USA ... that was during Zia Ul Haq Era when articles used to go in news stating how its a waste of fund to invest in helicopters ...

During that time Zia was drunk with power and control and unitarlily created policies and closed existing programs

And look now its 2013 and we have no helicopters every country is ordering helicopters
after the suceess of Apache in Gulf war and later wars

We need to stand on our own feet and make the helicopters

Indigenous projects require lots of money at least the first time when we have 0 experience.
Look at LCA Tejas, Arjun, they are great projects but India started a little too early. We have spent so much, we could have bought a lot more with the same amount. Now we can afford to make these. So we are progressing fast without any problems.

Pakistan needs to buy equipment for the next 15-20 years. It can offer natural resources to China in exchange with defence equipment.

In two decades, Pakistan's economy would be good enough to start its own projects. Remember: The first projects need LOTS of money.

Investing now when the same money can be used to mine Coal, search oil and build infra for business, would cost a lot. In future the profit from same ventures will be enough to buy these toys. An example is UAE.

very good explanation

When Pak will try to develop a helicopter, it will be a light one

I'm not really sure how to respond to this and other rather naive posts in response.

my 2 cents.

Please do appreciate that a helicopter is powered by a jet engine, usually 2 Jet engines.

we do not have that expertise as yet.

Please also appreciate that a considerable setup is required to assemble and manufacture an already designed vehicle.

We do not have that as yet.

Even if we get to the design phase, a lot of back ground is required in alloy design and metallurgy in general.

We do not have that as yet !

Lastly, projects like this are initiated by people with vision and aspiration of doing more than "NAUKRI".

We are still waiting for that type to show up amongst the blasted afsari !

helis use turbo shafts not jet

Turboshaft engines are commonly used in applications which require a sustained high power output, high reliability, small size, and light weight. These include helicopters, auxiliary power units, boats and ships, tanks, hovercraft, and stationary equipment.

For example, LCH uses HAL/Turbomeca Shakti turboshaft

would we have LCH, Dhruv (both are in service)series if we had this attitude?

Keep studying. they are the same thing.
If you drive a shaft with a jet engine it becomes a turbo shaft.
If you use the velocity of exhaust gasses through a nozzle it becomes a jet engine as you may know it.
by principle, they are the same.

I am sure if Pakistan Military gives / donates 2-3 Cobra helicopter engines to Pakistani Universities they could innovate a better engine with minimum funding

The sole Problem that 99.99999% of my Pakistani Bros don't seem to know.

ECONOMY.

Sir,

Bring Money and we can make everything from Helicopters to Satellites.

BUT we don't have the economy. We don't have the money.

I hate to say but if all these old Politics continue one day even Indians will truly get ahead of us.

starting from scratch is very difficult and long path which not everyone should take under extreme circumstances or you have lot of money to spare like China or US or even russia..the best for Pakistan is to collaborate or tech transfer through a company , get the heli's made in Pakistan under license and learn

you can and every country has this option, but the option they dont have when they are either santioned or asked to buy at exhorbiant prices, second- domestic production increases confidence and boosts local industry

good idea but its not so simple to make a copter because its avionics are far different from jet fighters...but the thing is iran which have sanctions ,making their own helicopters jets cars so y not we ..we must learn to stand on our own foots...

It's been ~20 years. Funding for the LCA was only given in mid-90s.

Are you high? You think the LCA project started in the 1970s?!!

It is a complete myth that the LCA has taken an unusually long period of time to be developed. Loo at the les of the F-22,Rafale,EFT,PAK-FA etc all have similar if not longer devlopment time periods and that too with countries with signifanct aeronautical design and devlopment expertise wheras India had 0.

India had to literally build a technical base as it went along with the LCA project and despite this it has delivered a pretty good product in a perfectly reasonable timeframe (as stated ^^) for a fraction of the cost of other fighter projects literally 1/30th- 1/100th of the spending of the aforementioned fighters.

The same myths are perpetuated about the ALH and Arjun but anyway........

The LCA project was started in the late 60s.....1969 to be precise.

Utter balanoy, funding was realised in mid-90s and the project only got underway properly at that time. Yes some general/politican may have mentioned that India needed a light weight Mig-21 replacement many decades before, but this was all talk and nothing was actually done until many decades later in,like I said, the Mid-90s. The project team wasn't even assembled until 1991 FFS!
