One thing both sides here forget is the fact that there’s a middle ground. If designing our own takes too much time and is too complex. And buying from foreign countries is too expensive. Then the army will repeat what it has done many times before. Take a foreign machine close to its needs. Modify it. Make it better (a Pakistani variant) and produce it.
We’ve done it with the Al-Zarrar.
With our Agosta 90-bs
With our frigates.
Partly with the Al-Khalid.
The Mushaak.
The K8P and so on.
In that way we’re making a lot of stuff ourselves. While it is a matter of “pride” to have completely made something yourself. That pride is useless when you won’t have the machine you need when a battle breaks out because you wanted to make one yourself.
We can easily take such a helicopter from China or a European country and make this happen when we need it. Let’s just hope they know when their deadline is and what their requirements are. And usually the military does know that.
