Why Modi wants Goa CM Manohar Parrikar as his Defence Minister

You guys are being too harsh for V K Singh. Modi knows his capability and that is why he got a very important post even he joined BJP so late. The whole age drama and fight with congress was only one issue in his whole tenure. He raised his voice against Antony who was doing things wrong and corruptions in Army. I still go by that the fact that he was the best general we had in past 10-15 years.
It's funny that since being given his MoS position he hasn't been seen in the media or been making any noise (contrary to how he was behaving in the run up to the elections and for the past few years). Modi seems to have found a way to shut him up which one can only praise the PM for.

I don't think you are aware of just what VK Singh has been doing/saying since he left the army and even a bit before that. You would be surprised how disliked he is now by the serving Indian military members. VK Singh chose a very public feud over serving with dignity and in the process disgraced the IA and then when he left the IA he continued to run its name through the mud in what appears to be nothing but a personal vendetta against the now COAS. For all the noise and cr@p he spewed against him, the GoI obviously didn't take his word for it and cleared his appointment soon after they came to power. VK Singh would be a terrible defence minister who can't seem to look beyond his own interests.

And even that corruption allegation regarding the Tatra trucks seems to have been a halth truth (at best) as, other than his claims he was offered a bribe, the CBI could find not one shred of evidence of any wrongdoing and closed the case.

Best general in the last 10-15 years? On what basis? A General is meant to be a leader, what kind of leader disgraces his service and all the men and woman in it like that?

.
The Sushmas and Rajnath Singhs of BJP are what you call stateless leaders. They enjoyed a clout disproportionate to their utility mainly due to their visibility in capital over a prolonged duration and that they were too self important in the scheme of things when the party had too few marketable leaders.
In specific cases of these two, they are intellectually lightweight in this current dispensation that Modi is fashioning on competence and vision. That is why it would be a mistake to consider Arun Jaitley a political lightweight and indeed an injustice to the man to attribute it solely to his proximity to Modi. The same goes for Parriker as well.

And even if one concedes that the clout is due to proximity to Modi. One has to ask 'Why' is he considered close? Does he pay money? or he brings something to the govt that is unique?

You misunderstood what I said. I never suggested a lack of competence. Sushma Swaraj & Rajnath Singh have a reputation for being fairly competent & Jaitley, by all acounts is more than competent. The point being made was that Jaitley is the most light weight politician among the three, with Rajnath Singh being probably the only one who might be said to have been a political middleweight. All three have a reputation of being honest (even with the supposed story of RS's son) but it is the perceived proximity to Modi or the lack thereof that reflects on their image. While Sushma Swaraj scores poorly because of her relationship with Modi as being not particularly close, Rajnath Singh has been progressively downgraded once in office. Jaitley on the other hand is widely regarded as the one with Modi's ear and derives his power directly from that perception.

Parriker will come in (if he does) with enormous clout of his own. The very point that Modi would have signaled his importance in his scheme of things by asking a sitting CM to join the union cabinet would make him a very powerful figure within the cabinet.

VK Singh was only disliked by those who love corruption and the elite. Singh is not making any noise or looking for media attention because he has a job to do and he has full faith in Modi leading India to greater elevation. Sometimes, a general has to fight back, yell and kick to get attention to what is going wrong with the system when the system is so screwed up. In case you didn't notice, Singh is handling the Northeast and tackling the border issue head on. Modi actually did right by putting him in charge of this sensitive situation.

Wake up from your fairytale and stop defending Congress for all the crap they did.

The BBC noted in 2012 that defence experts considered a drive to modernise the Indian army had suffered from "a lack of planning and acrimony between the military and the defence ministry". This report followed an interview given by Singh in March 2012 that had caused a political row. Singh said that over a year earlier he had reported to A. K. Antony, the defence minister, that he had been offered a bribe of US$2.7 million if the army bought several hundred sub-standard vehicles. Antony issued a rebuttal to the interview, saying that he had requested at the time that Singh provide a written report regarding the incident and that this had never been submitted. Two days after the interview with Singh, correspondence between the general and the prime minister, Manmohan Singh, was leaked. This criticised the standard of India's defences and caused a further political row.

V. K. Singh won the following awards during his career:
During his service as the COAS, V. K. Singh was appointed Honorary Aide-De-Camp to the President of India. He was the Colonel of The Rajput Regiment to which he belonged and also Honorary Colonel of The Brigade of Guards, by virtue of being the Army Chief.

On 11 March 2011, Singh was inducted into the United States Army War College (Class of 2001 graduate) International Fellows Hall of Fame. He is the 33rd International Fellow and the first Indian Armed Forces officer to be inducted.

You deserve "Nobel" for this "discovery " !!!

Which apparently means it has nothing to do with "Habits"

From Day 1 till Day whatever till today - Modi has got no "muhurat" to expand his cabinet . He has put his trust on Jaitley who has spend more time in and out of hospital . I guess he is consulting you on appropriate " muhurat " for cabinet expansion since you know so much about modi.

You might as well know what is the colour of " Kaccha " he is wearing today !!!

So first you say he has put his trust on Jaitley , then you say Jaitley is a puppet . Just because you seem to be awfully uninformed doesn't mean everyone is . Its common knowledge that Cabinet expansion would happen by winter.

since I am not as 'simple minded' as you might as well call me ' idiot ' directly than going via ' latter ' ...

If you assume a conclusion before something even starts then one needs to be termed as an idiot

Spoke to my Friend in Goa , Majority (Hindus ) Don't want him to go , but Minorities ( Catholic ) are already calling him Back stabber and that he is Running away from his Responsibilities , He has been target of Certain influential Minorities who have been blabbering about RSS , Rise of Hindutva and blah blah , even when their has been no communal tension or incidents under BJP Role .

Church and Minorities were very vocal against Modi and parekar in Lokshaba Election , But Still Both Seats in Goa was won by BJP for first time in two decades.

You guys also check GoansonFB Group large debate is going on their .

That is no surprise.

The Greatest Opposition and Attacks against Hindus and Hindudtva and Modi has ALWAYS come from the Christians, from Indian and Abroad.

Most Hindus automatically assume the muslims to be the the villains due to the long unsavoury history, riots etc. but the truth is that all the "intellectual" and sophisticated propaganda against Hindus and Hindutva and Modi has and will continue to come from christians.

Even on PDF the trend is clear.

However most prefer to remain ignorant of the dangers by dismissing them as "stray" elements even thought the fact is that such elements in Christianity is the rule rather than the exceptions.

Christians? Don't you think that;s a broad statement? I can agree to an extent but there are loyal, patriotic Christian Indians! I think the focus should be on Missionary work which Muslsim do also. IN the Northeast, I have seen videos of Naga and ULFA members going to the US asking for donations and support from White Americans. The play up violence and atrocities against them saying they are not allowed to practice Christianity freely.

My question is why no Indian agency has not brought this up to anyone;s attention all these yrs!

The Vatican is targetting 3rd world nations, because it is a source of a large number brainwashed idiots. You see I am a Christian but I'm quick to call a spade, a spade. Hindus and Muslims also engage anti national behavior. Don;t kid yourself. If it was left up to Hindus, I doubt the Caste system would ever change. Some Hindus are still upset about the Untouchables switching religions because there will nobody left to wipe your sh-t.

Will Goa’s metallurgist add steel to India’s defence?

“It is easier to get the army to vacate from Lahore but not from even an inch of land in Panaji…” This was Manohar Parrikar, as a newly elected chief minister of Goa in July 2012 accusing the army of land-hogging during a debate in the legislative assembly. Two and a half years down the line, Parrikar may just be in a position to get the Indian Army to do his bidding, with his name now making rounds in the national capital as the country’s next defence minister. The fact that Parrikar, along with state party president Vijay Tendulkar and organising secretary Satish Dhond, have rushed to Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah only appears to have corroborated media reportage tipping him as defence minister in the impending round of cabinet expansion. The qualified metallurgist had only just returned from Delhi last week after a series of meetings with cabinet ministers to pursue pressing Goa-related issues which required the central government’s concurrence and sanction.

Asked about the likelihood of Parrikar’s elevation to the central cabinet, state BJP vice president Willfred Mesquita Wednesday quoted Shakespeare with a twist: “Party is such sweet sorrow… We can never be happy when someone parts. But if someone goes for better prospects, we should be glad.” Parrikar’s is the country’s first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) alumnus to become a chief minister (in 2000), before another IITian Arvind Kerrial joined the elite club last year.
Almost synonymous with the BJP in Goa, 58-year-old Parrikar has always been viewed as a leader with promise within the party, although ironically it was his ambition streak as well as his ability to put his foot-in-the-mouth on the most sensitive occasions which have proved to be his Achilles heel. In 2009, Parrikar was one of the top seeds in the running for the party’s national president position, when the furore triggered by his comparison of BJP stalwart L.K. Advani to “rancid pickle” during an interview to a local cable news channel turned the tide against him. In the run up to the 2014 Lok Sabha election, Parrikar appeared to be gentling maneuvering himself into a position of a consensus candidate for prime ministership.

Tell-tale signs of this emerged on the social media, where his fans started a group ‘Manohar Parrikar for Prime Minister’. Among other signs was his interview on The New York Times’ online India edition ‘India Ink’ where he said that he would have done a better job at handling the riots which occurred in Gujarat in 2002. In the eventual scheme of things, the Goa chief minister was forced to play bridesmaid to Modi, announcing the Gujarat chief minister as the man to lead the BJP for the 2014 general elections. Parrikar’s track record in his most recent stint as chief minister (he served as chief minister twice before in 2000 and 2002) has been chaotic and marked with ‘U turns’ and reversals on key issues like mining, tourism, casinos and land resource management, as a result of which the BJP has had to face flak both from citizenry and the media. “Parrikar himself was lobbying for a cabinet position because he has made a mess of affairs in Goa… The defence portfolio is his escape ticket from Goa,” Congress Rajya Sabha MP from Goa Shantaram Naik said.

Parrikar’s elevation may just help him turn a new leaf and begin a new political innings in Delhi’s corridors of power. If he does indeed become defence minister, it will be the senior most position in government ever held by a politician from Goa, a small state which is considered politically insignificant. Deputy Chief Minister Francis D’Souza and Speaker of the Goa legislative assembly Rajendra Arlekar are considered to be in the reckoning for the chief minister’s post in Goa if Parrikar joins the Modi cabinet.

@Bang Galore

Guys, let's not forget the presence of the NSA Mr Doval, Modi seems to relying on him quite a bit as far as both internal and external security issues are concerned.

Clearly Doval is one of the most powerful figures in Modi's administration. He's still one man with a lot on his plate. won't hurt to have some competence in key ministries.

I am talking about the people who churn out and support Anti-Hindu and Anti-Modi propaganda. Not Christians in general.

I did not call the christians anti Nationals, only Anti-Hindu.

Even the most "secular" of christians harbour anti-Hindu sentiments. They are just far too much in the minority for it to come out blatantly, but it shows through their writings. When their population in India increases, expect far more stronger actions and words.

No Indian agency has been brought into this because most Indians have been programmed to see the Muslims as the real villains. Even though both muslims and christians are beef eaters, its the muslims who get shunned and get the sharp end of the social stick. The christians continue to get patronage and privileges and continue to think they are better than hindus with their "caste" and "sati" and .... you know what.

I have seen you call a spade a spade but you are a minority in that sense. Even most Hindus do not call a spade a spade. Its a personal characteristics.

When you make such absurd anti-Hindu statements like "If it was left up to Hindus, I doubt the Caste system would ever change. Some Hindus are still upset about the Untouchables switching religions because there will nobody left to wipe your sh-t." You only prove my point.

This coming from a man who says he calls a spade a spade. :disagree:

Read up on Swami Vivekanda and his thoughts on Kerala. You dont know much about the Christian community in India long before the Europeans arrived. They were here in Kerala and lived peacefully. The Hindu kings granted the ability to live, farm and trade. Nobody is going to keep quiet when there is injustice. Historically, Indian Christians have committed no violent act against Muslims and Hindus in India. That's a fact and that's why the focus is on Muslims.

As for my comment, there is some truth in it. The state of low caste Hindus was dismal and continues to be so. Go to tamil nadu and you can see it yourself. It may be hard for you to digest but its the reality. Great Hindu leaders who called for such treatment and removal of such social barriers were accepted by many, but not entirely. You can still go to parts of UP, Bihar, Chattisgarh and see how caste is being used to marginalize society from politics, jobs, education, etc.

I have seen so many Hindus defend this or pretend it doesn't exist. But you know this isn't true. So why not accept it and eradicate it completely.

It is Hindus who changed the caste system. The Christians and Muslims promoted it rather by codifying it. So do not kid yourself about it. You are a rare Christian though. Agree lot of Hindus are anti-national too.

o_O so you want you DM to play counterstrike across the border just cos he and angry old man,i wonder if he pissed cos of his wife, then pakistan would be doomed. :D

Yes most probably final decision would be made on inputs from Intellegence agencies to NSA ,who would discuss it with the PM before finalising any deal,so irrespective of anyone being DM decision would be made based on inputs from chain of command and it wouldn't be an individual choice at all from either DM or PM ,though final nod would be given by the PM.

No offence bt I hate Christianity and bible (Ive done reading many times)

He is a well known hater of Malayalis,Bengalis,Christians,Muslims in this forum..He is under the impression that religion denotes race and ethnicity of a group..Thats why dimwits like him equates Indian Christianity with some Christian mullahs of NE..
