Indo-Israeli long-range surface-to-air missile (LR-SAM) is all set to be test fired from India’s largest Stealth destroyer INS Kolkata in coming months.

LR-SAM missiles are currently been loaded into INS Kolkata and Navy plans to test the new missile system in its normal operational configuration, which means Navy will not wait for Monson season to get over and missile will be tested by September or October at the most and in its very first test it will intercept missile fired from another warship.

Introduction

LR-SAM missile system has been designed to defend against any type of airborne threat including aircraft, helicopters, anti-ship missiles, and UAVs as well as cruise missiles and combat jets, While it has been tested from land based systems earlier in Israel, test firing from INS Kolkata will be first instance of missile been tested from a Naval platform at high sea .

LR-SAM can be fired from a Vertical Launch mechanism which provides 360-degree coverage against any incoming threats. Flying at Mach-2 missile has an operational range of 70km and with new extended range variant planned, with the addition of the extra solid booster range of the missile will further increase to beyond 120-150km in near future.

Israeli-developed MF-STAR [multifunction surveillance and threat alert radar] mounted on INS Kolkata and its sister ships will provide crucial guidance for the missile systems and this missile and radar system combo is also capable of engaging Multiple threats Simultaneous from different airborne platforms .

LR-SAM is also the first missile system in the world which was designed for Interception of Supersonic Anti-ship cruise missiles. Shipment of P-800 Yakhont anti-ship missiles that was delivered by Russia to Syria was one of the primary reasons why Israelis wanted to develop a new missile systems which can Intercept Supersonic Anti-ship cruise missiles.

India which had developed Supersonic Cruise missile BrahMos with Russian help were also concerned that a knockoff of supersonic Yakhont cruise missiles might be supplied to rivals in the region. India’s worries were not unwarranted since later Chinese showcased supersonic cruise missile Chaoxun-1 (CX-1) missile which will be offered for export and likely to be supplied to Pakistan in near future.

It is also alleged that India provided crucial information on BrahMos missile systems to Israelis to develop such advanced technologies to enable LR-SAM to carry out interception of Supersonic Cruise missiles successfully.

In one of the tests carried out from test rig in the Negev in Israel, the missile successfully intercepted a maneuvering air-breathing target representing an attacking combat aircraft and in simulation flight test it has also intercepted supersonic cruise missiles like Chinese CX-1 or Russian Yakhont.

LR-SAM missiles will provide much-needed long-range protection for Indian warships which until now heavily depended on point defense missiles systems which could provide coverage of only 15 km’s, which meant that airborne threat could come to close to the Indian warship, before interceptors could be fired .

BrahMos

INS Kolkata is also equipped with the universal vertical-launched BrahMos Supersonic cruise missile system as its principle precision strike weapon and can fire salvo of 16 missiles with pinpoint accuracy over it declared operational range of 290kms at Mach 3 speed towards its target.

This deadly combo of LR-SAM and BrahMos missile system will be adopted on new warships under construction and later in phases will also be installed on older warships which are already in service with Indian Navy.

BrahMos can fly at high, medium or low altitude flight profiles and in low flight profiles missile can stay just 10 m above sea level, which means even heavily guarded warships can only detect BrahMos when it approaches the radar horizon which is about 30 km away from a ship.

Us experts believe that Supersonic missile like BrahMos will give mere 20-40 seconds reaction time from detection to the launch of interceptor missiles. To make it even worse for the enemy warships India has added “double-maneuver in S-form” into later blocks of BrahMos missiles, which means in its final phase after it has been detected before approaching its target , missile will perform complicated maneuvers to escape interception which will only make Interceptor missiles job much more difficult to carry out successful interception if ever Interceptor missile launch does happen .

BrahMos also has the ability to be fired in Salvo mode and can hunt in packs which mean missile can take different approach towards same target or completely different target in the vicinity it will not only overwhelm defense mechanism of the target warships but also other warships providing cover to the target warships .

Induction of BrahMos provided a much-needed boost to India’s offensive capabilities from its warships and now Induction of LR-SAM will also mean Indian warships will be provided highest protection to warships and its crew. This deadly duo combo will provide enough confidence to Indian warship crew to take on even the most Advance warships operated by rivals in the region.

.
Yes , the most deadly combo.
In an another article on PDF on How to defend Brahmos, American think tank had argued the same thing.

.
As American analyst said, India deploys poison and antidote on same platform. These are undoubtedly the best missiles in their category at-least a decade ahead of our any adversary.
