Why is South Korea so obsessed with Japan?

. . .
Koreans are obsessed about Japan and Japanese, period.

Heck, even their historical dramas.

Its always affixed with Japan somehow. But notice Japanese historical dramas ever mention anything about Korea.

Korea to us is just...irrelevant historically.

Gotta love their 'depictions' of Japanese...LMFAO!!!

South Korea complusive behaviour and obession with Japan.

Millions of Koreans perished under brutal Japanese rule。Most Koreans hate the Japanese for a good reason.

Millions of Vietnamese perished under brutal Japanese rule. Some Vietnamese love the Japanese for an odd reason.

Yea my mother told me about the war atrocities like rape , pillaging and the millions who starved to death during Japanese occupation. We don't forget nor do we look up to Japanese.

I have sympathy for China like The Rape of Nanking and Unit 731 at least China and Vietnam has dignity unlike Taiwan who are sellouts of their own people.

Koreans obsess about Japan; Japanese could care less about Korea. That's just the honest to God truth. They are, to us, irrelevant.

Yeah and who the hell care about Chinese. People keep trading, goods keeps passing through border. There are always people of that kind or this kind, regardless of nationality.

But you do care, like this thread, perfect example. And 99% Viets member(Though I know there are many Viets IDs, but they come from those 1 or 2 people) here, they can only keep yelling "Chinese aggressor, return our land" or something similar, I don't seem them engage in other topics. LOL. Please get some other things to do.
Had it been in any other region say for example in South Asia or middle east, it will have had not just farrr more influence but it would have also been a regional hegemon/leader/powerhouse.:bounce:
If so, they are not Koreans any more, or they are not East Asian race any more, so there will be no Kpop, such hypothesis would fail, since no different from the current world.

Its very interesting that despite the fact how Korea is a shrimp amongst whales, Koreans have a very supremacist view of themselves as compared to Japanese and Chinese people. Just interesting to see that a country that has either been a tributary state of China's or Japan's colony for most of its history, the Koreans have a very ultranationalistic sense of self.

LOL

So you are saying that they even beat you guys & Chinese in this Race & IQ BS

True Korean pop music/culture rules not just Japan but China and even Asia as a whole.:) For a small nation its size, S.Korea has indeed done quite well in this field, better than any other country in the region. S.Korea is just unlucky to be located in East Asia where there are world giants like China, Japan and Russia, hence it has little space to maneuver. Had it been in any other region say for example in South Asia or middle east, it will have had not just farrr more influence but it would have also been a regional hegemon/leader/powerhouse.:bounce:

If it would gave been located in my region then it would been irrelevant

Korean pop music rules Japan? LOL! Majority of Japanese would be insulted if you tried comparing their music to ours, Mike. I admit that I listen to "some" Korean techno hits, but to say that average Japanese folks like myself go 'ga ga' for Korean music is preposterous.

Besides, I think we Japanese have more Swag. ;)

Yes, they do, its ridiculous. Ever been to a Korean national forum ? Or been to a Korean university setting? I had the pleasure of doing an exchange program in Inchon for 6 months during my under grad years, Koreans , to me, are very very nationalistic. And they don't hide their low opinion of Japanese or Chinese folks.

Their society is way more xenophobic. Japan, definitely, is way way way more accepting compared to their society.

LOOL NOT really since korea is still far more advanced than even China in many fields, much less India(who is the powerhouse in S.Asia).

Nope, Korea pop music is still the most popular in Asia. In fact the only Asian country whose music has had a wide ranging effect/influence over the west/world is Korean. Their pop music is indeed the most popular in Asia by far. Japan shouldn't take this one from Korea.:D
Japan's anime still reign supreme in Asia and even the world though.:enjoy:

Korea more advanced? LOL. How can they be advanced when all they do (Koreans) is copy and claim it as their own? People unduly associate China as copying others, but the original copy cat in Asia is Korea.

I don't see what's all the schnazz about Korean music being the best. I dont find their music all that impressive.

So, no.

Calm down buddy. From years of personal experience interacting with Koreans (as well as Japanese), I think Koreans have a mixed emotion towards Japan.
 • They are indeed extremely nationalistic and patriotic to a level that could hardly be found in other countries, on this I suppose basic instinct of survival (way smaller than neighbors in size, been invaded in history) is one of the many reasons behind (others I will omit for irrelevance).
 • On the other hand, Koreans hold exceptionally high regards of Japan, many times I heard praises like "most advanced nation", "perfect society". For Koreans, Japan is the highest benchmark on everything (tech, industrialisation, infrastructure, education, low Gini Index, fine arts, well-balanced homogenous society, even fashion and music!), which are worthy to be matched. Even on areas that Korea lead the world (say shipbuilding, LNG ships, consumer electronics, nano tech, LCD, infrastructure building, industrial automation/robotization), these were achieved only through decades of benchmarking against the textbook-standards set by Japan.
 • Hence I wouldn't say Koreans are "obsessed with Japan in general", but narrow it down to "in deep worry about revival of Japanese Imperialism". They have experienced that before, and being 1/3 the size of Japan, they have every reason to worry about the future, on their survival, for that's the chance they can't take.
I hope Japan and Korea, the 3rd and 5th largest industrial powers of the world, advanced and neighboring societies, can continue to improve bilateral relationship, seek common ground on historical accords and negotiate a peaceful deal on territorial dispute (Takeshima/Dokdo, not an easy job!).

P.S.: Off topic,

Some may draw comparison to Vietnam's emotion towards China.

I think in bilateral relationship, the bigger country, especially if a lot bigger, should take proactive steps in addressing security concerns of the other side. Wars happened in the past, and will happen again in the future, military casualties are normal, but civilian casualties are unacceptable tragedy (I have deep remorse on any civilian casualties caused by China in the past few thousand years). All countries should negotiate peaceful deal on whatever dispute, move on to prosperity, avoid wars. If wars become unavoidable, minimize or even eliminate civilian casualties, that's bottom line.

Japan did copied from us in the west/U.S as well in the beginning. So its not just a Korean thing. You have to start from somewhere and learn from the most advanced ones who are still ahead of you. Many countries did the same to get where they are today(even the U.S). Korea did it in the recent past and China now are no exception. No crime in that, as long as you catch up/move ahead.:bounce:

You Japanese and Koreans are all very awesome people and hope you guys can sort out your differences and form a some supranational union, EU style, with other East Asian states - China, Mongolia and Taiwan. That's the sort of future I like to envision for East Asia!

I don't know why you always say that if x country was in x region, it would be x. If it was placed in another region then the dynamics would be entirely different so is the outcome. You can't predict anything about it.

Their GDP per capita will surpass Japan very soon.Perhaps then they can stop this obsession
