What's new

Why is IMF blaming previous Govts for current economic situation in Pakistan.

Provide Paris Club Loan figures and schedule, that was done in Musharaf's era.

Find your own sources. It's common knowledge the PPP inherited a BoP crisis caused by Musharraf's mismanagement.
Look - I don't recall enough about what was going on then to take a position either way, but as posters (it's not just you) we have to stop resorting to 'look it up yourself'. If someone makes a claim, that individual is responsible for providing sources supporting said claim, otherwise the discussions regress into trolling and baiting.

I was a Nawaz supporter in the past but truth is truth....his policies to push import based growth by keeping the value of the pkr higher then it should be with loans hurt in the long run. PPP was a complete disaster. IMF is correct in this assessment.

Pakistan should not pay a single money back to IMF since all these corrupt politicians like Nawaz shareef and zardari have parked their ill gotten wealth the looted wealth from Pakistan in western countries who r major shareholders of IMF and if they want their money back they can just confiscate that wealth and auction it
that is exactly what Orya Maqbool Jan said yesterday in some talk show, plus Debt Audit of previous loans taken by Pakistan.

So Musharaf borrowed mere $1.5b to keep dollar at 60rs and subsidize a whole lot more!, For 8 long years! Wow!

Yet PPP and PMLN borrowed $37b in last 10 years for what? $ went from 60rs to 125rs in exactly 10 years, Budget deficit sky rocketed.

These figures clearly tell the tale that Musharaf and his team were much better at managing economy than the scum who followed. He managed it all by borrowing just $1.5b whereas the scum couldn't manage with $37b!

ALSO compare the loadshedding during Musharaf's era and PPP!

Steel mill was profitable.

And so on the list goes.

Thanks to 9/11 Musharraf get a lot of debt rescheduled and renegotiated at a lower interest rate
it is not shown in the IMF loans

Oh my goodness! 24.9 billion in 2014-15. Ye sara paisa kahan gaya? Ye paisekahan kharch hue?

Its Pakistan fault not to pursue these claims
Remember that people of Pakistan asked the swiss govt to return the money to zardari..even today most of the educated people think corruption is fine..it was people of educated center punjab that asked for PMLN govt

Funny thing is this isnt new where were the people in 2015-16 sleeping ..these reports were out in 2017 while state bank was crying in 2016

I have seen there many intelligent posters in PDF from Pakistan...Pakistan getting loan from IMF is a done deal...So rather than debating about why Pakistan going to IMF, you should initiate a separate meaningful discussion about, how to use the money to improve economy...
IMF is not savior...Pakistan as a nation and its leaders has to decide their own path where they can use the money properly to improve their economy.

Even on this forum my posts from 2016

What money ..it simply going to be used to pay the already 5.8b$ loan

All Pakistan needs to do is
1. Dont print money/keep fiscal deficit low
2. Flexible exchange rate

It will never end up with IMF

But to do the above things might become really bad if govt is performing bad, it might not be able to mask its performance by messing with above too.solution is to fix things not play with fiscal deficit and exchange rate

Because IMF knows since they made it happen in previous govts, now they will blame future woes on
PTI govt when it becomes a past.

@Abdussamad

Musharraf left behind a huge mess because he didn't pass on oil prices increases in order to boost his party's chance of winning the election. He kept the dollar artificially weak on the basis of borrowed dollars and his finance minister encouraged consumer lending to boost economic growth. We basically borrowed dollars to subsidize foreign oil exporters and import appliances on credit. These policies caused a massive BoP crisis which the PPP inherited in 2008.

Well argued, sir!. Plus, during his 9 years tenure, the power sector was completely neglected- no major thermal or hydro power projects were started, which has bitten Pak power sector badly once oil price increase rendered FO based generation unviable. Besides, little was done on T&D and tariff reforms.

Regards
