Why India National Anthem has word "Sindh"

If its God, then how does it defeat India's claim of secularism? Is the anthem specifically implying that the God is Allah, or Rama, or Giant Spaghetti Monster?
It is implying that there is a God - even if its implying its the cookie monster that is a violation of secularism. Secularism mandates that the government neither acknowledge nor deny the existence of a God - for the purposes of governance, God should have no role.

You're denying the right of the atheists to state there is no God.

The United States proudly writes "In God We Trust" on the back of its currency notes. Now you will claim the US is not a secular state
Because of which, it still faces criticism, however just like any other country, their religious fundamentalists won't allow that to change.

Back to the topic, there was a petition to remove the word Sindh from the anthem and the Indian Supreme Court rejected it.

That's just stupid rigidity. Also the petition should be to drop Tagore's poem altogether and get in a more Indian poem. Editing an existing poem would still mean that the spirit in which the original was written, is being acknowledged by Indians - praise to their colonial master, the 'Dispenser of India's destiny'.

Because it was written prior to Partition of India, and it was not edited or changed. The one funny thing is no "Hindi speaking state" was included in the National Anthem.

Its not funny at all. First you didn't understood it well. It included all of the 'then India' in different ways. Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat, Maratha (Maharashtra) , Dravida (Southern India), Utkala (Orissa), Bango (Bengal), Bindhya (Madhya pradesh), Himachala (All the regions of Himalaya including Kashmir, Himachal and north east), Jamuna and Ganga (the land of Yamuna and Ganges ie Uttar Pradesh, Bihar etc). No one can make a song with names of all states of INDIA nor it intends to.

So you can interpret it any way you want to.. the most important thing is.. who is this "Bhaarata Bhagya Vidhata" ?

Its the Lord of Destiny, that Reader of the Collective Mind of India. That makes people like you and me Indians for thousands of years.

Some say its King George, some say it is Gandhi, I say its me :)

That was a shameful comment. Its neither Gandhi nor some king. Both were denied by the poet and the govt.

Why people find it difficult to understand that another song written in hindi was specifically used to praise Georgie the king on that occasion, or they just want to stir the controversy for controversies sake? Tagore could no way address George the 4th 5th or anyone as 'Bharat Bhagya Bidhata'.

Sindh in the national anthem represented an ancient Indian culture and rich heritage, not a province.

PS:-BTW guys don't you think we should complete our National Anthem.;)

Those who researched Tagore would know that during the time he composed the song, he was more inclined to spirituality which is evident from Gitanjali for which he was given Nobel. The song spiritual in nature, nothing else.

Asim, I find that deeply insulting. History knows who were more inclined to their 'colonial masters' at that time. When the poet himself took the effort to explain the meaning of the song, by saying it was a praise to colonial master, you're only indulging into character assassination or in other words scoring points.

i think there is no need to change any thing...its perfect. as far as the Dispenser of India's destiny is concerned its absolutely secular. it just depends on person views...for a religious person it might be god and for an atheist it might be people of this land who are capable to lead India to its destiny. as far as praising the conlonial master is concerned its absurd to claim Tagore wrote it with such intention.:sniper:

Thou art the ruler of the minds of all people,
Dispenser of India's destiny.
Thy name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sind,
Gujarat and Maratha,
Of the Dravida and Orissa and Bengal;
It echoes in the hills of the Vindhyas and Himalayas,
mingles in the music of Jamuna and Ganges and is
chanted by the waves of the Indian Ocean.
They pray for thy blessings and sing thy praise.
The saving of all people waits in thy hand,
Thou dispenser of India's destiny.
Victory, victory, victory, Victory to thee.

I rest my case. There is no name of Hindi speaking state. Do not take it personally, it is just an observation. I am not trying to demean any one per se.

That is not a shameful comment. If you read the statement again "Some say" was used, that means I was talking about the controversy.

It is obviously not Gandhi, its either King George or God, probably George. If its god it defeats India's claim of secularism.

Who does The dispensor of India's destiny and the ruler of the minds of the Indian people refer to in this poem?

Lets see what the AUTHOR himself said about it?
The dispensor of India's destiny and the ruler of the minds of Indian people is God.

Just because a newspaper reported wrongly on what the poem meant would not mean that they were correct. The author wrote it with this intention and the people who sing it sing it with this intention.

King George could not rule the minds of the people let alone be the dispensor of India's desitiny, only God can.

I studied few years in an Indian school and had to sing this matarm every morning! It was a perfect pledge of hypocrisy me being a Pakistani. And then was the daily pledge something like "all indians are brothers and sisters and I shall uphold intrest of my country at all times...." dont remember the exact wordings.

its our national song, respecting it falls under our fundamental duties..

you know what is imposed .. your current National Anthem.. which replaced the Jinnah Sanctioned first National Anthem, because it was written by a Hindu who had to save his life and relocate to India.
