It's just like the title question asks? Why does both countries have more than one border guards. Pak has rangers , frontier corps, GB scouts. India has BSF , ITBP , assam rifles, SSB etc. Correct me if i am wrong , but they all have some sort of border guarding duties right? Most countries in the world have one paramilitary agency to guard the border. Eg. Turkey has Gendarmerie , China has People's armed Police , Vietnam has Vietnam border defense force, EU has Frontex , US has U.S. Customs and Border Protection ,Bulgaria has the Bulgaria border police , Finland has Finnish border guard , Ukraine has the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine , UK has the Border Force etc etc. What is the rationale behind this arrangement? Shouldn't one single agency with 1 command structure lead to more cost effective and efficient management and coordination? If its for geographical diversity and terrain then what abt other large countries? Even geographically diverse countries like US , China , Turkey (its as large as PAK) has 1 single agency to guard their international borders. I am asking just out of curiosity. Its a military site after all and their r many knowledgeable military enthusiast here.

The US three agencies handling border protection, not one.

It has Customs and Border Protection (CBP - which includes the Border Patrol, Field Operations and Air and Maritime offices):

Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE):

And the US Coast Guard (USCG):

Acting as border guards not just CBP. The US Marshal Service also has border control jurisdiction, but it's not an often applied responsibility.

Big nations, big requirements. There's a lot of traffic to and from India and Pakistan, and a lot of entry points into each nation. They need multiple agencies to cover all of their responsibilities and requirements.

Disclaimer: I don't know many Indian members here. The ones i normally tag , have been banned over the last 2 days for some reason. I don't hold any ill intent towards the ones i tagged here. Just randomly found them. Indians don't have a good opinion abt me here. Indians i tagged , please don't misunderstand.
lol you dont have to put the disclaimer, this forum is for everybody and you got every right to tag anybody you want. :)

I am no authority on the subject. I thought its only bsf who is primarily responsible for manning India's border. other forces are much smaller.

But why can't one agency do that with multiple offices and branches rather than having multiple agencies. Btw I didn't include coast guard since most countries have separate coast guards and land border forces.

I thought may be some Indian members would think its an attempt to make them fight with PAK members. U know how in PDF it doesn't take long for a full scale thermonuclear war between India and PAK to occur , regardless of the nature of the thread.

But i guess u are right.

you take this forum too seriously, why should you bother what Indians/pakistanis think, I mean does anybody care what bangladeshis think? as long as you dont violate forum rules(and local law where you live) you can say anything you want... whats the point of having an anonymous online forum if I cant say what I want?
ontopic: ITBP was raised specifically as border force for a specific terrain, after we lost 62 war. BSF was raised after 65 war with pakistan.
Assam rifles or ssb are not really border forces as such. Any of these forces can be deployed elsewhere(inside India not on border) even if its not their primary duty.

.
You put this question out of quriosity or to justify your worth in this forum. Blabbering nonsense, troll, sarcastic remarks in every threads, what better you bring wherever start typing.
About the thread, both the countries have unofficial territories where many countries have claims or the parts are later occupied so they cant say its their official boundary or have some plans to stretch these boundaries farther. Since they dont have definite boundary they are using some indefinite forces.

Pak has;

Pak Maritime Agency
Pak Coast Guards

These are Paramilitary Forces not just "border forces" ;

Panjab Rangers (Paramilitary)
Sindh Rangers (Paramilitary)
Frontier Corps KPK (Paramilitary)
Frontier Corps Baluchistan (Paramilitary)
GB Scouts (Paramilitary)

National Guard
Mujahid Force (more like reserve troops)

Etc

Its because of each have expertise in different fields. Pakistan has a diverse terrain and thus needs a diverse set of units with equipment that are based on their geological region.

Punjab Rangers protect the vast Punjab plains and are called into cities during times of unrest.

Sindh Rangers are now mostly used to keep control in Sindh and are on the forefront of fighting terrorism and crime in Sindh. They are also loosely posted along the Sindh - Indian border.

Frontier Corps can be called more of a 'Militia' as they are lightly equipped and are made up of locals. The Frontier Corps keep infiltrating terrorists out and check any potential future Iranian/Afghan ambitions.

GB Scouts is also a paramilitary unit that is very well trained and experienced in mountainous warfare - they are made up of locals and know the surrounding area very well.

India uses 1 border force per region or country (varies).

So for Pakistan border is by BSF.
China is ITBP,
Nepal and Bhutan is SSB
Myanmar is Assam Rifles
Bangladesh is BSF.

As to why Pakistan and BD both have the same border force despite the concept of using one Force per border. The answer is simple - at the time the force was deployed, BD was Pakistan. Since then , it is administrative lethargy.

Why do we have 1 border force per country?
So that there is division of power. Prevention of a coup.

At the time these forces started getting organized, the fears of a coup were very real and the constant examples of neighbours where the Military ruled further fanned these fears - that IA might take and copy these examples happening in Pakistan and elsewhere.

So these new forces needed to be kept away from the Indian Army so that they do not become overtly powerful. They are also deployed under the Ministry of Home Affairs and not under the MoD.

Thirdly, even amongst themselves they are divided into one force per border
so that in case the Military coopts the Border forces, it becomes much more difficult by virtue of having different forces and command structure so coordination becomes much more difficult and easier to prevent.

Lastly, Efficiency - a specialized force for a geograhical/border area makes them more efficient in that area over time and it develops unique methods and processes for that border.

Good for you. I gave the reasons for India. Don't really care why Pakistan did it.
