May be that was the case. But everyone today regards that as a practice of the 'Sati' times.

Just clarifying about culture.

ZOB,

You are right if you had started your comments with ".... Indian VIDVHAAS HAD to do".
Hindus did follow some practices which were barbaric. They included everything you mentioned, and more. Unlike relatively recent religions (like Christianity, Islam), Hinduism does not have one book/rule base to guide, and has evolved naturally over a period of time. In the process, such shameful practices also got adopted into the religion.
Thankfully, the same natural evolution has also given us flexibility to challenge the "de-facto rules in force", and in the process some reformers have been able to get rid of most of such practices. Though white saree is worn by some widows these days also, its more voluntary and those who do not do that are accepted in the society without any issues. Sleeping on mat, eating only boiled food, sati etc. are almost abandoned, Sati is even considered an evil by the same Hinduism today.

BTW, all these things happened much before we both got independence, and hence it is completely inappropriate to attribute these practices to "Free India".

Hence it may not be appropriate to identify contemporary Hinduism or India with those practices.

well, that is what you wanted to do.......let it go.......i know many are touchy bout religion.......so i rather not insult or cricticize any religion.........things get worse when you bark at dogs when they bark at you.....sometimes its nice to just away........just in case you want to insult hinduism, certain threads are on a roll now, started by your friend communist......no one else starts this types of crappy thread to grow hatred betn religions and insulting others....btw if you remember most of us were of the view that wearing of burqa is ones choice,if somebody wants to wear it,fine....we dont give a damn......but enforcing is another thing.............but in this thread with gradual insulting ports from both corners things got worse...... thnx

If you say some practice like Casteism in Hinduism is bad and should be abandoned. Then yes dude, many people may agree with you. But if you write things about non-existent things, people who are new to this may think that is true and get misled.
I don't even have a problem with bashing if everyone concerned knows what is true and what not.
I don't think anyone is interested in bashing Islam here, if that is what you are concerned about. Its only about a prevalent practice, which many people do not attribute to the origins of the religion.

.
I think that is what happens when the thread gets played out .. everyone on this forum is generally educated enough to deem whats right and wrong .. when everyone agrees that burqa is a choice then I think this discussion is over.

My great grand mother on my grandfather's side used to wear white clothes till she died recently.
My mother's grandmother does not wear white clothes even though she is a VIDHVAA.
Both are from villages. But there are even more underdeveloped villages in India. I cannot say no one today wears a white sari.

Just giving some idea...

Pus!
You really need to get a life!
Thank you for your suggestion. I sincerely hope that you practice what you preach.

How can you and who are you to qualify someones belief and way of life as indoctrination?
Indoctrination means accepting something uncritically, without examination and on faith. Those educated (at least one of them was pediatrician) Saudi women think that preventing women from voting or having a driving license is all right for a society. They think that way because they haven’t considered these issues with a critical mind, and probably because these do not directly effect their current “happy” life (whatever would “happy” mean in this context). It is nothing short of indoctrination.

These ladies do not realize, that not having a voting right is a very rude way of saying that their opinion is worthless and that the society doesn’t need it. Not having a driving license is a similar way of saying, that they don’t need to drive. These are nothing but insult to a woman and when such an insult is eulogized, instead of being protested, then it is obvious that they do not even understand what their rights are as women. They have accepted their position in the society, uncritically, without examination and on faith. That is indoctrination.
What if we say that butt naked indian and western girls roaming all around is indoctrination!
You can say that. It will be your opinion only. Peer pressure is indeed one of the reasons why teeny bops in the west behave the way that they do. But peer pressure isn’t necessarily indoctrination.
If someone choses to wear something or to life in a way that doesn't suites you, why would you term is a intimidation and indoctrination?
The question is, is the so called choice made in an environment that promotes other choices as well ? If it does, then, I don’t have a problem with any choice.
Tomorrow you may also say that it is brain washing if someone voluntarily wears a burkha or covers herself according to the teachings of Islam.
Just because some practice is directly or indirectly endorsed by a religion, it doesn’t automatically become valid. And indoctrination is, in a sense, brain washing.
Did anyone here on this thread, till now has termed the western or indian way of life as an imbuement of thoughts?
So ? Am I expected to return the favour(sic) by calling spade a hammer ? In one society, young women’s vagina is sewed up, leaving just enough for the biological functions, as some sort of chastity belt ritual. I guess nobody should protest it, because after all they are not pointing at the deficiencies of our society and raising a hue and cry.

.
well like u said VIDVAA dressing and stuff is choice we say BURQA is also a choice not all women wear a BURQA and according to you not all women wear WHITE SARI EAT BOLIED FOOD...so before you point fingers see your religion...you think its a choice fair enough we think this is a choice!!!

& ISLAM TODAY is being misinterpretted when islam came it gave women rights which NO OTHER RELIGION HAD....while in europe women were looked upon as a child producing machine and in india(and no at that time we were UNFORTUNATELY ONE so i am not pointing fingers at you) people thought women shouldnot live if there husband dies....satti....ISLAM CAME AND GAVE WOMEN RIGHTS.....please read those rights......islam defined stuff like heavens is at your mothers feet....and wife should be not treated as a door mat...so on and so forth....

so let's just not point fingers at hinduism and you please don't point figners at ISLAM....let's leave it at that...or if you want let's discuss BURQA here and let me open a thread and let's discuss a thread about VIDVAAs i bet you don't even like the sound of t so please humbly stop commenting on something you don't know!!!

That was pretty harsh sis..!!! To each their own opinion..!! Well one thing, what you call dirty.. is the real life or a better life for that matter sis.. the life where women are independent..!!! If you are not forced and you are wearing burqa on your own good for you..!! But i still believe its only for those people who are not confident about themselves.. not confident to express themeslves.. not confident to interact with people....not confident about whehter they can survive in the world on their own.. According to me it will be always a symbol of discrimination and weakness..!!!!

its your own opinion well if u think wearing burka means no liberation then u are wrong i m doing every thing.my father never never never forced me to do anything which i dont like i m studying i go out with my frnds i can do every thing which i want no one force me,,,but i love my abaya and i cant leave it..islam has already given us full free dom to live accordingly to our own choice to choose husband of our own choice so i dont want any one sugesstion on freedom..
just like u think burka is symbol of discimination and weakness and i think that exposing yourself infront of others and for joy of other men is weakness ok
brothers i think u mens are weak u dont have any limberation bcoz u wear full clothes  and women wear ------ hahha so

I apprecite your input sis. You are the true voice of Muslim sister that we all proud of. You see you can't make these people understand the significance of wearing burka or Hijab because they refused to understand it in first place. They are infected with liberal phobia where they like to see their women half naked which is also desire by west. To them it's freedom of expresson, sign of progress and so on wheresas to us it's opposite. At the end this single Ayat is answer to their bogotry:

"Lakum dinukum wa-liya din"
"Unto you, your moral law, and unto me, mine
"

.
Oh pls, lets stop.

If its choice, sure why not? Burka can be worn and proudly.

But in OP the woman was forced to wear by threat of rape, so its a no no. In saudi women forced to wear, so its a no no. anyone who says wear or u'll be raped is force, hence no no.

At the end this single Ayat is answer to the bigotry of those who say 'wear burka or be raped / molested / disrespected':

"Lakum dinukum wa-liya din"
"Unto you, your moral law, and unto me, mine"

So don't worry abt what I wear and don't rape me brother!

If burka reduce the threat from being raped by an animal than yes, yes. It's a law in Saudi so yes, yes and there isn't any complain from Muslim world so no one really care what non Muslim desire. If some doesn't like it than they get the hell out from there.....

Endorse by me but can't guarantee the prevention from your countrymen. :)
