New Delhi: All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) supremo Badruddin Ajmal has held Congress responsible for illegal immigration of Bangladeshis into Assam.
Speaking to India TV, the billionaire perfume baron-turned- politician said that his party is also in favour of sealing India’s borders with Bangladesh.
“ Congress is responsible for illegal immigration from Bangladesh . We also want sealing of borders. For last 11 years, we are saying that the border with Bangladesh should be sealed. All illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, who arrived after 1971, should be thrown out,” Ajmail said.
The AIUDF chief went on to say that his party will cooperate in identifying illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. However, he added that nobody should be subjected to atrocities.
“ Take us into confidence. If any Bangladeshi arrives, he will hide into a Muslim’s house only. We’ll search every house and identify them but don’t commit atrocities over any citizen,” he said.
Badruddin Ajmal, however, expressed his opposition to the fencing of borders with Bangladesh.
“ We are against fencing. It involves bungling of crores of Rupees. It’s of no use. It’s so easy to cross borders,” he added.
He also raised questions over the action taken by Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in this matter when the party was in power in the state.
“ AGP came to power twice in the state. What did the party do?” Ajmal asked.
AIUDF won 13 out of 60 seats from where the party put up its candidates in recently concluded Assembly elections. The electoral graph of the party has gone down tcompared to 2011 Assembly elections when it had won 18 seats.
Badruddin Ajmal himself lost the elections from Salmara South to Congress party’s Wazed Ali Choudhury by 16, 723 votes.
The state is all set to get the first ever BJP government under the leadership of Sarbananda Sonowal. The three-party alliance led by the BJP has won a total of 86 seats in the state. The BJP has won 60 seats on its own while the AGP has emerged victorious in 14 seats. The Bodoland Peoples Front has won 12 seats. The Congress party which ruled the state for last 15 years could manage to win only 26 seats.
