Don't give me that we don't want new enemies crap.
It would be a disaster. The last thing you want is to send the army in. However there was a time when we should have insisted on having boots on the ground.
Back in 2001 when US asked our help to destroy the Taliban government in Kabul Musharaf should have agreed on one condition. That Pak will help US to go in to hunt OBL but we would also go in to make sure our interests are safe guarded.
That after Afghanistan is invaded Kabul must not fall in hands of anti Pak groups like Northern Alliance. Musharaf should have told the American the following.
1) USA has every right to hunt for OBL and what is needed in that regards.
2) Pakistan has every right that it's enemies do not end up taking over Kabul.
With this clear Pak should have sent a small force ( SSG ) to make sure no Northern Alliance people end up taking over Kabul. Musharaf did not do this ( in doing this screwing for the second time to Kargil ) and Pakistan ended up helping America to remove a pro Pak Kabul regime with pro India regime. Bravo General Musharaf bravo. We see the result of that every day now.
I often hear people in UK talk about the British leaving European Union. However one of the strongest arguments made for staying in EU is that "If we are in we can influence on where Europe goes". That is Europe is UK's neighbour and it is going to have profound effect on UK. Therefore you should be in the centre of making decisions that might have profound effect on you.
In other words you want to be sat in the crew cabin of a aeroplane so you have some say where it goes. If your not in there you have no control over where it goes.
Ditto Afghanistan. We chose to hand Afghanistan over to America. They in turn handed it to India. We should have said "we both go in, you go for OBL we will hang around to make sure no NA groups take over Kabul. Also while there PA could have protected the Pashtuns some of who suffferd terrible retribution from Tajiks of NA. This would also have bought us extra goodwill over the Pashtuns in Afghanistan. That way we would have made sure we had a handle on who takes over Kabul.
No responsible government would allow or worse help a external power to come and replace a friendly neighbour with a hostile enemy.
Now it is too late.
