Why do we insist on calling India a vegetarian country when two-thirds of us eat meat?

What the Pakistanis and the likes of the author of OP don't realise that even the Non Vegetarians don't eat Non Veg daily

I'd say that was more economics driven than by choice.

Chicken is relatively cheap but mutton is exorbitant. Pound for pound a cow/bull gives a lot more meat per animal than a puny goat does.

But we have religious sensibilities there, so the bovine livestock is out. That leaves goats, and unlike countries like New Zealand etc. which rear them in the millions, we do not and cannot.

Because small or big, livestock needs grazing, and grazing needs land, and India has a problem dedicating large sections of land to cattle feed / grazing, when we have a human population of 1.25 billion to feed.

Eventually, as land holding keep getting smaller and smaller, we are going to see a point where farmer suicides plateau and the villages start moving en masse to the cities like in China. It is then that the government will have to step in and secure a percentage of land for cultivation, and mass scale cooperativization of agriculture and cultivation to keep it economically sustainable and meet the country's needs.

Similarly, live stock like poultry will have to be bred and fed sustainably for consumption, like in the west. The current scene is just not scientific, resource sustainable, or adequate to meet our needs.
