Why didn't India nuke Pakistan?

Some posters here (mostly Pakistanis) portray India as a bloodthirsty nation which would not spare anything to destroy pakistan completely. According to them India tried to destroy pakistan right from its creation.

As far as I know, India tested nuclear weapons in 1974 (smiling Buddha). It had a yield of 8 kT, which is still quite a lot of destructive power. At that time, pakistan didn't have any nuclear program let alone nuclear weapon.

If the Pakistani member's assertion is true, why did not India nuke pakistan and occupy it in the 1974 - 1998 period? 8 kT is not much, but still enough to destroy any pakistani city at that period I would assume. Why did not India do that?

An honest question to both Pakistani and indian members.

LOL. According to your logic then this world would only have Mongols living today because back then they were the most powerful people on earth and could easily destroy any country they wanted to.

Yes India had nukes just before Pakistan did but that does not mean she could destroy Pakistan if she wanted to do so.
If India did attack Pakistan with nukes then world war 3 would break out and China would not just sit idle and let India get away with the crime and then Russia would join in and USA and....etc

It's the thinking not policy. All our Pak friends think India is upto destroy them. Most of Pak political system run around India and Kashmir issue. In India politically no party bring Kashmir or Pak issue in elections. So public opinion is not that bad. It's not good too

Many Indians see China as a threat than Pak.

And on Nuking Pak......... India on day first declear a no first use policy. Plus if you nuke Pak the radiation effects are going to hurt India too.
No matter what our all megaton friends say. If any country nuke other country in the continent all counties are going to be affected. So nuking is not a option to anybody. It's just after death insurance for everybody

In 1974 india just did nuke test, that was not clear indication that india master the technology, there are lots of loop holes in that,

On top of that they did not had any proper delivery system, and PAF proved to be more stronger, so they dont have this options..

Likewise detonating and experimental nuclear device does not mean it is ready to be launched..in 1974 India had a nuclear device but not a nuclear warhead

I do not see how? At that time, China-Pakistan relations were not good as well. If China did not help you when your country broke, what makes you think they would help pakistan if India nuked it?

As I see, India would have had the full backing of USSR because USSR would have gained access to Arabian sea if India did destroy pakistan with nukes and occupy it.

USA and USSR were the only countries remained after WW2. No one was in the position to do anything let alone the punishing thing. Plus USSR wasnt having any nukes and they were friends at that moment

I do not see how? At that time, China-Pakistan relations were not good as well. If China did not help you when your country broke, what makes you think they would help pakistan if India nuked it?

The idea of nuking a country is impossible now. Not even the United States will get away with it if they did it now. Back during the end of World War 2 the United States had 85 percent of the world on its side.
