Why Chinese Tourists Love Japan

Japan must do what must to gain confidence of the world and our immediate neighbors. That includes a formal apology, removal of the class A criminals in Yasukuni, lastly a formal peace treaty with Russia.

lol ok, you can go back to Japan now in time for next general election for PM.

OK, some data: in 2014, about 117million Chinese passangers travelled out China, and spent 140 billion $, 90% of their Travel Destinations are Asia area; and only 2.4 million of them went to Japan(accounted for 2%), 6.1million went to South Korea(5%);

Asia accounted for 89.5%, (in which Hong Kong(more than 40million), Macao(21million) and Taiwan accounted for 70.4%); Europe accounted for 3.5%; 3.0% in Africa; the Americas accounted for 2.7%; Oceania accounted for 1.1%; 0.2% other.
In 2014, The biggest change is the tourism market in Southeast Asia. Due to Thailand's coup occurred in 2014, the safety factor of the Philippines, Malaysia, and the hostage incident two aviation accidents and other factors, leading to Chinese tourists to Southeast Asia sharply, 34.3 percent year on year decline.

"In addition, AirAsia Southeast Asian tourism market crash will also continue to have a negative impact, especially in Malaysia, expects full-year 2015 is immune to pick up." The person in charge, compared to the Southeast Asian market downturn, the Japanese tourism market(for Depreciation of the Yen and relax visa) in the past two years downturn recovery with South Korea, to South Korea and Japanese tourists increased more than 40%.

The point is this: the potential for trickle down effect of positivism in image is there. As intergovernmentalism continues in positive upswing, as Japan adopts a more public , apologetic stance on the war, then there's no reason why public opinion poll for both Japanese and Chinese won't increase to reflect a more comprehensive , mature policy.

Anyways, i like to see things from a positive vantage point. If relations between Japan and China (on a demographic aspect) is in want --- then improvement can be seen. As per the GENRON poll i posted, Japanese pollers agreed (majority) that improvement of relations is necessary between China and Japan. Which, in my opinion, is a sign of defrosting the proverbial 'ice'. :)

Agreed. Warming f of relations at the top will eventually lead to warming of relations at the societal level. Although I did not like the condescending language of the article, I am fine with growing trade and social communication between China and Japan. The reverse is abnormal.

Maybe we need a "new normal," an upgrade in bilateral relations. The 70th anniversary is an opportunity to start clearing the historical burden. Besides setting the historical feelings rights, Japan also needs to get rid of the image of being US' forward man in Asia. I guess China can tolerate Japan desiring to be one of the leaders and equals in East Asia (nothing is wrong having ADB and AIIB competing), but it cannot tolerate Japan's doing others' bidding in the region.

As for the particular shopping interest : That's a social phenomenon with so many variables. No social phenomenon is unchangeable. Once variables change, it will change. In China's case, demographics, the nation's development path from low and to high-end, growing wealth and people's ability to travel etc.. play a role. Taiwan's safety record is not enviable, but we do not see a similar (hyped-up) interest.

Unless politics at the top is not set right, these social phenomena can change quickly. I guess we need more durable, more stable and more cooperative relationship.

Agree!

The tourists phenomenon is a reflection of the reality that ordinary Chinese do love Japanese culture (that also applies to Taiwan, Korea and HK), let's hope it wouldn't be destroyed by politics! I remember a blockbuster in China, in particular worshiped by the unique group of auto-sports lovers (Qiuming Mountain 秋明山 is their holy place), made by HK/Taiwan with a lot of Japanese elements in it. At one time waves of Chinese flocked to Tokyo and HK in search of preserved AE86 (only RHD available so can't be registered for road driving), that's awesome bro!

BTW, any well preserved sacred AE86 in Taipei ready for sale? It will sell like hot cake here still, PM me if so, thanks!

I guess is because of lower exchange rate of JPY to CNY..
When I went to Japan in 2011/2012, 1 CNY can only change 12 JPY..
Now 1 CNY can change 20 JPY...
So consummation in Japan is much cheaper for Chinese..

It is true our tourist love Japan now, above all things, it is because japan has gone back into recession.

Just OK la, started drifting some years ago with FR cars (RR like 911's are disastrous though), fancy but I favor smaller and lighter FF/FWD cars at mountain roads and curves, no drifting but head spin (推头), maybe driving habit from early days of sporting.

I bet your tires don't last 1 month during your younger days. 2nd hand FR cars with LSD are hard to get these day.

I wont give a damn to race cars or other hobbies with a Japanese cultural influence
If I have to choose a place of visiting on leisure where the people are welcoming or are, by and large impartial in attitude towards us OR another place which has a heavy history still projecting to present time and still hate us to the core, where should I go? Do I need to do a research paper to reach a conclusion?

The kind of herding mentality (羊群心态) is demonstrated galore in one of the CCTV test where the test subjects are to pick their preference after tasting the cooked rice samples obtained from a Chinese cooker vs a popular Japanese cooker

that is what some Chinese bought from Japan, made in China,
lots of Chinese tourists bought foreign goods , but finally found it made in China.

Putting politics aside, Japan is great!

Tourists love Japan's environment, the style, and of course its products. Say cars, Chinese buy domestic version of R35 even it's RHD so cannot be driven on streets. In Shanghai there's a club of which members regularly go Japan to buy R35, converted in Japan (most popular with NISMO or GREDDY) or do that in China, and play at Shanghai Tianma/天马 Circuit (similar to Tsukuba/筑波 Circuit but smaller in scale, Shanghai does need more circuits). A lot of Japanese products are world best, and that's why Chinese are rushing for it!

There are also a lot of Japanese professionals (not just GTR, also Swift, Evo, ISR, Supra, NSX to LFA) in Shanghai helping numerous Chinese fans on engineering, parts supply and racing skills, welcome bros!

Not necessarily, some people in Canada import Japanese cars like the ones you mentioned but they are not in love with Japanese culture. It's because the Japanese cars are better to be modified than a typical North American car.

And the reliability is deem to be greater.

Many people buy Chinese made goods, doesn't mean they are in love with Chinese culture.

i'm for more people to people exchanges in general. be it tourism or business Chinese and Japanese can actually get along well if we put the toxic politics away for a while.

not so optimistic on top governmental level though i'm sure they are trying...

Media needs to stop with the sensationalist style as well. Normal everyday people in Japan who don't know full detail of history and politics get affected by Japanese media of showing angry Chinese people burning Japanese flags, or destroying Japanese cars as in the last anti Japan protest.

In that aspect, Japanese are very sensitive and reactionary. There is a consensus that Chinese people hate Japanese, so the people respond by having negative impressions on China.

What's interesting is that by 2010 and earlier , image of Chinese people and China was extremely positive. So what does that mean ? Politics and media sensationalism is to be blamed. The sooner we normalize relations , work together on political cooperation , resolve historical issues, then the sooner repair can occur.

Polls are subject to change , they merely reflect opinion during a particular time, and are thus subject to change. The last poll was taken in 2014, that means it was recorded sometime before recent political gains between the two. I'm sure that new poll will reflect the positive developments this far.

Lastly, let's all be wary of media's overly sensational style. In the attempt to make a profit , they would jeapordize relations of Japan and China. Interestingly enough its WESTERN media that posits regularly.

You are quite right bro, Japanese products are of great quality, and for sure that's one reason behind this shopping spree. Beyond durable consumer goods, apparels and FMCG, Japanese cultural goods are also selling like hot cakes here too, though some Korean cultural product lines seems to have an upper-hand these few years.
