China to unveil aircraft carrier as media takes dig at India's naval power

Against the backdrop of reports that China’s first domestically built aircraft carrier will be unveiled soon, state media on Monday took a dig at India by saying its first home-grown carrier isn’t even operational and that New Delhi should keep its military ambitions in check.

Reports in the Chinese media said the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy was making “final preparations” to launch its first domestically built aircraft carrier to mark the 68th anniversary of the founding of the maritime force, which was on Sunday.

“The scaffolding around the ship, temporarily named the Type 001A, was removed and the deck was cleared,” Shanghai-based news portal thepaper.cn reported, indicating the unveiling is likely to be done soon though it could not happen on Sunday because of low tides.

Reports said it took China about five years to make its own aircraft carrier that it will be inducted into the navy by 2020.

State media took the opportunity to make a few points about the naval capabilities of China and India.

In a piece with the headline “India needs to learn that economic development comes before a naval buildup”, the nationalistic Global Times tabloid said: “Aircraft carriers are seen as symbols of a nation's military might, but the construction of them consumes huge amounts of resources, thus requiring developing countries to learn how to keep their military ambitions in check.”
China had no aircraft carrier till 2012 while India’s first was purchased from Britain in the late 1950s. China’s pursuit of military development has been in “sync” with its overall economic development, the article said. It added China’s priority was developing its economy and then building “resource consuming” aircraft carriers.

“India itself could be taken as a negative example for a buildup of aircraft carriers...New Delhi is perhaps too impatient to develop an aircraft carrier. The country is still in its initial stages of industrialisation and there will be many obstacles that stand in the way of a buildup of aircraft carriers,” the article said.

China would have finished work on an indigenous carrier “several years ago if Beijing had simply wanted to engage in an arms race to have more influence in the Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean regions”, it added.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post said China’s new aircraft carrier has a displacement of 70,000 tonnes, is 315 metres long, 75 metres wide and has a cruising speed of 31 knots.

“It is slightly larger than the Liaoning, China’s first aircraft carrier, which was refurbished from the semi-completed Soviet carrier Varyag, which Beijing bought from a Ukrainian shipyard in 1998,” the report said.

The new carrier has a larger hangar to carry more J-15 fighters and more space on deck for helicopters and other aircraft.

State media has reported China plans to have six aircraft carriers, and the second one to be built domestically is being constructed in Shanghai.

I don't think it was good for Chinese media to put India down. Despite all the toys Japan still have Diaoyu island. I don't know wtf is going on with Huangyan island since PH fake charmed the Chinese

The article by the OP is from Doomsberg and my quoted article above was from an indian source. How is it that "Chinese Media" are putting indians down or they're asking for them in the name of "free speech"?

I am disgusted at the japanese claim of our lands and plenty more like they are presenting themselves woefully as the " innocent victims " of the WAR after which a shameful indian judge had helped them exonerate all their crimes; also the Chinese wasabis have been making me sick.

Huangyan Island is already our land which is being patrolled by our coast guards.

Regarding, the topic... we must avoid any comparisons with indians...

China and india might be two big countries with almost similar populations but the difference between them is Civilisational.

Two different planets, really! No comparison possible.

Anything which advances Human Condition in india must be applauded. Hopefully, indians can choose a constructive path and join China in OBOR.

The choice is indian.

Out of some 200 Su-30MKIs, at least 7 have already crashed. The crash rate is appalling:

On Wednesday, figures divulged by defence minister A.K. Antony in Parliament reinforced in numerical terms how the ageing Soviet-era fleet had shockingly been on a wing and a prayer for such a long period but still not grounded.

The Rajya Sabha was informed that over the past 40 years, India had lost more than half of its MiG combat fleet of 872 aircraft. The minister disclosed that "482 MiG aircraft accidents took place till April 19, 2012".

Antony also revealed that these crashes led to the loss of precious lives of 171 pilots, 39 civilians and eight persons from other services. The minister went on to state that the cause of the accidents were "both human error and technical defects".

We are operating Su 30 MKIs since 1998 and currenly we operate 230+ Jets. In 19 years of operation with 230 jet in service., We have lost 6 or 7.
On other hand in 2014 nd 2015 two years, 9 J10 has fallen down in 2 years inspite of the fact that jet is new and much lesser number in service. If i check crash rate, it is 0.16 crash per 100 jet per year for sukhoi mki and it is 4 jets per 100 jets for J 10 which gives it a crash rate of 24 times higher than Su 30 MKI and much more than even Mig 21.

Now go and take a rest. J 10 is a joke on the name of fighter plane.

And these are the fighures which china could not hide. Actual figures may be much higher.

Oh, I'm so sorry. Let's look at the whole.

If China's J-10 is a joke, China also has J-6, J-7, J-8, J-10B, J-10C, J-11, J-11B, J-15, J-20, J-31, JH-7, Y-20 and C919.

Please give their complete accident records.

There is a difference between our submarine sinking and your submarine sinking. Our sund due to explosion and your sund because of standard chinese quality. We took it out maintained it and it is in service now.

It is amazing to read that fallen plane numbers need third party confirmation. Typical chinese. Now tell your guys to produce evidence of third part confirmation of 7 sukhois lost in accident. You should have asked for third part evidence this matter too.

can someone explain to me why aircraft carriers aren't giant easy targets?? that won't be taken out within a week of a major war??

heck I'm sure a lot of Chinese on here have said U.S aircraft carriers are easy targets especially against the super weapon DF-21D??

you got thousands of sub-sonic and supersonic anti ship missiles
you got diesel electric submarines which are proclaimed to be black holes in the ocean
you got satellites which can track all war vessels including aircraft carriers

so tell me Chinese brothers how will China protect it's homegrown carriers??
