What's new

Why can't people stop admiring and voting for corrupt politicians (across party lines)?

is there anything wrong in being a product of the establishment ?

Nawaz Sharif is the best example. He rose quickly during the Zia days. He has outlived his patrons.

Well, nothing in wrong being product of the establishment but that wouldn't be democracy, would it? Basically, the choice is being made for the nation instead of giving the nation to choose from their resources.

Nawaz Sharif might no be best example considering he lived close to the edge, got lucky in many occasions, even escaped death penalty with great difficulty. Even now, he is hanging on the thin wall.

Time will tell whether he will be able to weather the storm or not. :D

All great leaders were brought by the establishment and later they proved themselves as leader of common people... However, they could not perform well even got a great response and mandate from the people... Z.A Bhutto who brought him??? Same NS also brought by the Establishment... There are number of other politicians who enter in politics via Establishment... Such politicians who come through above mentioned channel remained blackmail in hands of those who introduced them... I am really optimist a day must come when a leader will rise among the common people and will bring the real change and prosperity and will lead the nation towards the right direction....

NS belongs with Punjab province and none has the power to pronounce the death penalty to him...
There is no one answer to it, there are many different factors that affect the decision of different voters. We all have biases, let it be ethnic, sectarian or even intellectual. Most of the time these biases is what affects a voter's decision in an election.

Take Punjab, the biggest province and most of the time the deciding factor in our national elections.

Up till 2010s, before the PTI phenomenon, there were two types of major vote banks here. Pro Bhutto and Anti Bhutto. Pro Bhutto was of course the PPP voters, they loved Bhuttos and were their Jiyalas, there were some urban folks in it but most of this camp was made up of rural population. Why did they loved Bhutto? Roti Kapra aur Makan, that slogan was a real crowd puller.

The Anti Bhutto camp were mostly the urban conservative middle class voters, who were pro Zia and found NS as a continuation of his legacy. This is why PMLN is called a GT Road party, as their power lies in urban centers along the GT Road.

During the Zardari govt the Pro Bhutto voters in Punjab got disillusioned because of the corruption, his friendly attitude towards PMLN, and hence in next election we saw PTI winning a huge chunk of their votes in Punjab but in my personal experience most of the PPP voters stayed home instead and did not take part in the elections.

NS on the other hand was able to still use the Anti Bhutto votebank, remember his speeches during the elections, he was openly saying that any vote to PTI will actually be a vote to PPP and also that PTI is a B Team of PPP.

The next election will be a bit different in my opinion, because NS will require a completely different narrative than what he has been successfully using for past 3 decades. PPP is a non-entity in Punjab elections now, it will be PMLN vs PTI, and he can't use the corruption slogan as well, as that will only hurt his own party especially after recent JIT report.
To predict voting trends during the election particularly in Pakistan is very difficult... Whenever election is near or to be held, unfortunately an incident occurred that put the total weight to one side... PPP vote bank in Punjab seems nowhere but suddenly that can appear if it is linked with any incident if that occurred somewhere in Pakistan we cant say about it... So vote in Pakistan is given on caste basis or linked with other factors and bindings.... I am still pessimist that election 2018 will bring some changes in the country... the same people with same musical equipment and with same things will be repeated... because we lack in leadership and when one leader appeared somewhere we will then take off....
