Why can't people stop admiring and voting for corrupt politicians (across party lines)?

For as long we have been a democracy, we have seen people in positions of power and authority misuse the same for their personal benefit. Why does the common man not decry this? Especially when it comes to the same folks getting elected again and again....in simplest terms, how does the rising wealth of a local leader (obtained from questionable sources) help the development of the area / people? If not, then such a rise should send warning signals to the people who elected such leaders....but I don't see that happening....Why???

Money is the barometer of a society’s virtue. When you see that trading is done, not by consent, but by compulsion – when you see that in order to produce, you need to obtain permission from men who produce nothing – when you see that money is flowing to those who deal, not in goods, but in favors – when you see that men get richer by graft and by pull than by work, and your laws don’t protect you against them, but protect them against you – when you see corruption being rewarded and honesty becoming a self-sacrifice – you may know that your society is doomed.

There has never been true democracy in the political history of Pakistan. Most of leaders are products of the main establishment. Even Imran Khan has suspicious background that put him on map in regards to foreign donation.

I doubt the main establishment will allow the real democracy to prevail which will be essence of people's power directly from the people in Pakistan. I wonder if Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto came through the support of people or not. I heard he wielded strong popularity in Karachi which amassed the political power that put him on the map eventually which didn't sit well with the main establishment hence the military takeover unfortunately.

It would be nice to have common people in charge but the expenditure to run the campaign cost too much apparently.

Lack of education and awareness. Absence of thinking critically.
On top of that you have factors such as feudalism and ethnic/tribal politics.

Main thing is that nobody bothers to think critically and make a judgement for themselves.

Don't tell me you are alluding to the Pak armed forces with the main establishment remark.

That and the fact that we like to cast a family vote. If the family elders vote for a certain party so will all other family members. On top of that there is also a lot of vote rigging. Votes are bought by political parties.

Imran Khan is 100% correct when he says that the elections need an overhaul. You cannot have a free, fair and transparent election in such an environment.

What I am more curious about is why we turn every ideological leaning upside down when introducing it into Pakistan.

PPP for example subscribed to socialism, instead of uplifting the country they drowned everyone. Instead of bringing about an egalitarian democracy they introduced dynasty politics and feudals into government.

Political parties sell the product per demand in the market.

That is because our political parties are based on fancy false slogans. Socialism, democracy etc. are all meaningless slogans. In reality these political parties are fuedal and dictatorial in nature.

The reason is the narrow sightedness that's prevalent through the country. Someone politician running to be MNA or something would go to some town and get a road built(during or prior to the election) and secure their votes. These town ppl would be content that their pleas were finally heard and vote for the said politician not taking into account how bad he might be for the country. The politician will then proceed to loot money when he is elected which will be much more than what he/she spent. Then there is the voting based on cast, family name, or ethnicity(Punjabi/Pushtoon/Sindhi/Baloch/etc). The moment the general public starts thinking about what's good in the long term for the entire nation and not just their village/town/city/province that's when the change will happen. But for that the public needs to be educated and willing to let go of short term gains.

Besides this...it would really help if ppl in general stopped being corrupt. Our leaders come from among us. A milkman who waters down the milk, a cop who takes a bribe, etc. We can't expect angels coming from among us to lead if that's how the society operates in general. However this is a tall order...and realistically I don't see this happening. I will be more than happy to settle with the first option discussed above, where we won't end up with a truthful and honest leader...just one who is good for the country/nation...but still corrupt at some level.

Ethnic biases, tribal lineages, local benefits but the people you see here just paid trolls :D

The society is nothing, but a mirror of the leaders it elects. We also love personality worship. The society lacks education and awareness to elect a leader on good judgement.
The people are as corrupt if not more than the govt they elect

We need democracy to continue and in couple of decades we could get rid of every dynastic family. As families have their own interest in mind before country and its people. They cannot be allowed to rule forever.
