Why can't Pakistanis understand Bengali language (Bangla)?

Because Urdu has always been the language of communication of Indian Muslims, may they be Punjabi, Pushtuns or the Bengali. Non of the other languages were used after 1850's, not even the Farsi. Bangla language issue came after the partition. Your elders knew Urdu and I think they teach you too.

Why should we to begin with? BTW bangalis dont much understand or speak urdu, rather its hindi that they mostly understand and speak a little.

I'm confused, other than script and several vocabulary words they're pretty much same. Most linguists classify them as one. And they're both mutually intelligible. If one can understand Hindi why would have trouble understanding Urdu?

Look Bangla is a regional language - Urdu was sort of like the Lingua Franca during British rule and also before them, mostly in the North.

Today you understand it because you have been exposed to Bollyness.

Unfortunately Urdu is slowly dying in India. It is collapsing to Hindi.
Reflection is even in Cinema. Bollywood today use only a fraction of Urdu words that they did compared to a couple of decades ago. Its changing steadily to Hindi words.

Pretty sad situation here. Urdu is a poetic language.

I don't know about Pakistan but in India the 'elite culture' is dying. Films today increasingly use the words that the common man uses instead of 'proper' words that sounded good but few used( process started about a decade back).

Pakistani instead use, Yaar Kahan Ja rahe ho, Yahan betho..

No one say Hum apni Zooja k sath Mehfil main Jana chahtey hain...

People say, Wife K sath Party per Ja raha hon

Yes. That is how normal people speak.

My point was slightly different..that in India till atleast mid 2000's the depiction and vocabulary used in films and theater was always different from what the common man spoke. It was as if it was 'undignified' to use such common words in films and all.

This 'elite culture in films' was so massive till the 80's I tell you.

This has been changing slowly in general but particularly in the last decade. The language and everything in films is now increasingly what is in actual use by people in India. Its 'cool' now. It wasn't earlier.

Currently what we use is a mix of Hindi,urdu and Punjabi
The dialogues are mostly Hindi while the songs are a mix of Urdu and Punjabi

Think back a few decades. Even the dialogues were heavily Urdu. Now it is by and large restricted to songs.
Give it a decade or so. Urdu would be barely noticeable even in Songs.

Bengalis speak/understand Hindu/Urdu because they need to vault across the border and chat with their Hindi-speaking Indian....friends. Also, in the '80s, there was a steady stream of Bengalis travelling to and working in Pakistan.

Honestly it has no relevance to us.

What do you benefit by learning Bangla in Pakistan vis a vis Sindhi or Pushto for example???

Nobody ever tried to teach me Bangla. I can understand some words when Bangladeshis speak though. Especially the Sylettis.

The OP didn't articulate the question properly and gave scope to misunderstanding. I think what he meant to say is why historically Urdu/Hindi had greater penetration than Bengali in South Asia.

Only individual words will differ (only vocab diff is there) , Sentence structure and grammar are same as Sanskrit/ Pali/ Hindi.

That is the reason most Hindi speaker understand Urdu (same structure and framework but some words are different).

Can they even understand Urdu their national language?
Most I met (no not just UK born but also Pakistani borns that came here but are Punjabis), can't speak Urdu well. They always speak in Punjabi and the youths born here don't understand Urdu too!
