Why can't a billion people overthrow the Communist party and make China democratic?

People think Democracy is some sort of magic fix all, one size fits all cure for everyone... That is not true, take for example Yugoslavia. Slobodan Milosovic -- the democratically elected president -- left a legacy of more than 200,000 dead in Bosnia and ethnically cleansed more than 800,000 Albanians from their homes in Kosovo.

And what if democracy were installed in Syria? It's not hard to imagine the outcome for the minority groups who for decades have enjoyed the protection of Assad's regime.

Nicely put, although I'd argue that nationalism is the prime objective. I think currently the prevalent sentiment in China is pragmatism. Whatever works man, whatever works

That is true...whatever brings good result, follow that path...Because of democracy, India is just stuck in unnecessary religioin based appeasement stuff....

Back in the late 1990s, many people indeed viewed the US democracy as some sort of magic.

But after that, the US has overused their 'magical' democracy, so now it is not as 'magical' as before as less and less of people would buy their trick anymore.

Because they don't want democracy seeing how it failed so badly in a thirld-world country like India.

Since the collapse of USSR, the US has made many mistakes by strengthening Chinese people's immune system against their western democracy.

This is due their arrogance and simpleton mind.

They still haven't realized that people's support for CPC is becoming much more stronger than a decade ago.

Agreed. The Umbrella movement in Hong Kong, funded in part by the National Endowment for Democracy, was the latest US miscalculation that backfired spectacularly. Towards the end, over 80% of Hong Kong was against the demonstrators. I doubt anymore "democratic movements" are in store for Hong Kong any time soon.
