Why 80% of New Zealand is Empty

. .
I always thought of New Zealand as heaven on earth as we never hear anything about it in the news which I thought as a good news, until I met a New Zealand immigrant in Canada and according to him it is a hell hole on earth...too many crimes, after 8 pm people are locked inside their homes and no one goes out unless they absolutely have to....Is it true?? I still do not believe it.
feel the same here...
far from WW!, WW2, Mongol invasion, Soviet influence, TTP, ISIS, etc... Yes, resources are scarce as far as job market is concerned.. also, learnt the waterways are way polluted with nitrates.. anyway, better than Pak.

I lived in Dunedin for 2 years in 1995 and 1996. I know about New Zealand.

What the proofs that you lived in New Zealand we don't believe on your just wordings
he has a first hand experience so his opinion holds value. nonetheless, not a 'fact' as one needs a large data size to empirically state something as evidence..

Takes up a good chunk of our East Coast. Compared to Great Britain

Population: ~5Million

WTF?

The population mostly lives on the northern island which is closer to the equator. The souther island is colder and most of the country is infertile:

Birth rate in New Zealand is extremely low. Women are well educated and have good stable jobs. Kids are seen as a drag in New Zealand.

That's not the reason for their small population https://www.quora.com/Why-is-New-Ze...s-from-the-rest-of-the-world-on-a-large-scale

Not sure if this is well known internationally, but New Zealand is the major terrestial landmass of a largely submerged microcontinent Zealandia.

Story highlights

The term Zealandia was coined by geophysicist Bruce Luyendyk in 1995

New Zealand and New Caledonia were previously considered part of a region known as Australasia
New Zealand might be Australia’s smaller neighbor but it’s sitting on a massive new continent scientists have named “Zealandia,” according to a publication released by The Geological Society of America.

New Zealand and Australia might be able to finally give each other more breathing room. It turns out they sit on separate continents. New Zealand calls a 1.8 million square mile land mass known as Zealandia home. This new continent also includes New Caledonia, along with several other territories and island groups.

The idea of a potential continent in this area has been around for some time. Geophysicist Bruce Luyendyk coined the term Zealandia in 1995.

The dedicated study of this area over the past 10 years has determined it is not just a group of continental islands and fragments but that it has a continental crust large and separate enough to be officially declared a separate continent.

Previously, New Zealand and New Caledonia were grouped with Australia under the moniker Australasia.

While most of us would call this the eighth continent, geologists often consider Europe and Asia as one continent called Eurasia.

The publication by The Geological Society of America comes barely a week after scientists found a “lost continent” under the Indian Ocean.

This has huge implications for our nations future because New Zealands EEZ (exclusive Economic Zone) would by convention extend past the boundaries of the continental shelf. The region includes natural gas fields, mineral deposits , oil and fishing rights.
