President Mohammed Zia ul-Haq today linked two massive terrorist bombings that killed at least 72 here last night to agents opposed to Pakistan's support for Afghan guerrillas fighting against the Kabul regime and Soviet forces there.

Business and government life came to a halt in reaction to the bombings, which also left 140 hospitalized, including 15 listed in critical condition tonight.

Zia, who flew to Karachi today from Islamabad, was able to visit survivors in only one of two major hospitals because angry students were demonstrating at the other.

The Washington Post | July 17, 1987 | Richard M. Weintraub |

Pakistani Prime Minister Mohammed Khan Junejo said tonight that India and not Afghanistan may have been behind the two car bombings Tuesday that killed at least 72 persons here.

Junejo, who cut short a state visit to Japan to rush back to Karachi, appeared to be distancing himself from President Mohammed Zia ul-Haq, who said yesterday that he believed the bombing was related to Pakistan's support for Afghan refugees and that recent bombings were "only the beginning" of a severe test for this country.

LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Friday extended 10-day physical remand of two terrorist suspects, Rizwan and Haroon, who had allegedly facilitated four attackers on two Ahmadi worship places.

Law enforcement agencies produced the alleged terrorists before the court of Rana Muhammad Yousif amid tight security as heavy contingents of police personnel had cordoned off the ATC premises. Shafiqabad police sought extension in remand of the accused in a bid to further investigate into the matter. The plea was granted.

The accused terrorists will be produced again before the court by July 26.

Police had arrested Haroon and Rizwan along with five other suspects, Umair, Umer, Haji Javed Alam Arayen and Abbas, all residents of Lahore, allegedly involved in different terrorists activities, including Jinnah Hospital, Moon Market and other places in the city.

Meanwhile, the court has also sent another terror suspect Mehmud alias Modda to jail on judicial remand by July 30.

According to police report, terrorist suspects Haroon and Rizwan were also involved in Afghan jihad, Umair and Umer were facilitators and Javed Alam and Abbas were the owners of the houses where the terrorists had stayed on rent for over a month to plan attacks on Ahmadis’ worship places.

The accused terrorists, arrested from Muridkay and Shahdara, belong to Harkat-ul-Juhad Islami and Fazal Mehsud Group. They got training from Waziristan and Afghanistan, the report added.

Police had claimed to recover 18,000 kilograms explosive material, an anti aircraft gun, rocket launchers, 6 kalashnikoves, 21 hand grenades, 600 bullets, 16 magazines, uniforms of Elite Force and wireless sets. 4, 000 kg explosive material was recovered from the house of Javed Alam, a resident of Lower Mall, 6,000 kg explosive from the house of Haroon Saeed, a resident of Shafiqabad and 8,000 kg explosive material from the house of Abbas of Lower Mall, police further claimed.
