NEW DELHI: An Army jawan who had figured in a sting operation by a news website criticising the 'sahayak' (orderly) system last month was found dead in mysterious conditions in an abandoned barrack in Deolali Cantonment in Maharashtra on Thursday. Roy Mathew, a gunner, was found hanging from the ceiling of a room. Doctors said 33-year-old Mathew, whose body was decomposed, might have died three days ago.


Police sources said Mathew, who had served the Army for around 13 years, was among several jawans in Deolali seen in the video which featured soldiers walking dogs of officers and taking their children to school. The sting operation had sparked an uproar against the British-era sahayak system.

Mathew, who had been missing from his artillery unit since February 25, was facing an inquiry after the sting operation was posted online, sources said.

It is being probed if Mathew, who was attached for 'buddy duties' with a Colonel rank officer posted as an additional officer at the Artillery Centre in Deolali, had felt tortured or harassed after appearing in the video," said a police source, adding that after the video was widely circulated on various social media platforms, Mathew was questioned by several officials.


The source said Mathew had run away from the unit on February 25 and had remained missing since. "He had come under huge pressure," the source added. On being contacted, the Army, however, said Mathew had gone "AWOL (absent without official leave)" within 24 hours of the video being aired on February 24.

An Indian Army soldier who accused officers of maltreatment was found dead in his barracks in Maharashtra.

The body of 33-year-old Lance Naik Roy Mathew was recovered on Thursday, Indian media reported.

Mathew had gone missing from his artillery centre on February 25 after a video in which he criticised the British-era ‘sahayak’ or orderly system in the Indian Army, went viral on the internet. In the video, he described how the officers used him for menial jobs and even taking care of their dogs.

According to family members of the deceased soldier, he often complained to his wife about the alleged ‘servitude’ prevailing in the unit. Often junior level employees were forced to do domestic work at officer’s residences.

“He [Roy] called me in tears and said channels were playing clips of him.I want to know what happened to him,” ANI quoted Mathew’s wife Fini Roy as saying. “I don’t have wealth or political influence, there’s no one to help. I want to know what happened to my son,” said his father.

The distraught family of the whistleblower soldier, who served in the Indian Army for the past 13 years, has demanded justice in the case. “The CO (commanding officer) informed us that a body similar to that of Roy has been found and it was shifted to a hospital for post-mortem. Other than this we haven’t received any other information,” Roy’s brother John Mathew said.

The Indian Army, however, said Mathew had gone “AWOL (absent without official leave)” within 24 hours of the video being aired on February 24, according to the Times of India.

The development came in the wake of a spate of allegations of poor working conditions and harassment faced by Indian soldiers at the hands of their senior officers.

After BSF soldier, Indian police personnel exposes ‘ill treatment’ in service

Last month, Border Security Force (BSF) officials posted videos on Facebook showing the horrible condition of the food he and his fellow troopers are served while on duty. “We get one paratha for breakfast in the morning and we have to eat it just with tea. There are times when we are forced to sleep on an empty stomach,” Tej Bahadur Yadav said in one of the four videos he posted on the social networking portal. Yadav accused senior officers of selling off various ingredients in the market, leaving such substandard food for soldiers.

Days after the expose videos had gone viral, a personnel of India’s Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) questioned the treatment meted out to the force. Addressing India’s premier Narendra Modi, constable Jeet Singh in a video said there was a huge difference between the treatment meted out to the personnel of the force and the Indian military.

Very disturbing incident, hope he gets justice.....
Unfortunately, it's not the civilian authority but their own superiors mistreating them.
Quite a number of our soldiers have spoken out. The govt. should look into the matter before its too late. If the soldiers are not treated well, it can lead to disaster, India's integrity may get jeopardized.

PS: I hope, instead of complaining and dying, the lower ranks should pull off a mutiny and kill some of their corrupt superiors.

I think, that's the wrong argument and a detrimental one since it neglects the main problem.
A journalist (with whatever motive) has bring forth the slave like treatment meted out to the lower ranks of our defence forces. Even if the soldiers themselves have no problem(which doesn't seem to be the case as quite a numbers of our soldiers have complained already) with the 'tasks' given, we, as a citizen of India, should speak against the treatment and ask, why a soldier will have to walk their superior's dogs and run daily errands for their family and not have enough to eat?
If we overlook the actual problem...it may lead to disaster!

IA top brass sucks a big time be it scrapping such British era old useless system or in military modernization .
Almost every citizen will agree that the soldiers are meant to fight WAR and not for doing this crappy work but guess what even the current IA chief is heavily favored towards this system .Now its time for DM should step in and scrap this system altogether and my post was only regarding how this case is manipulated by the media guys
