Xiaomi has Caught Up with Huawei in European Market Share
2020-08-05 18:06:50 GMT+8 | cnTechPost

Xiaomi was the fastest growing vendor in the European mobile phone market in the second quarter, with a market share of 17 percent, the same as Huawei, according to a report released today by Canalys.

Xiaomi's shipments in Europe grew 65 percent year-over-year in the second quarter and exceeded 116 percent in Western Europe, according to the report.

Xiaomi's second quarter shipments in Spain grew 151% year on year, with a market share of 37%, continuing to rank first.

In the top five smartphone vendors, Xiaomi and Apple were the only two that saw smartphone shipment growth in the second quarter, with Apple growing 42 percent year on year.

Globally, Huawei overtook Samsung for the first time in shipments in the second quarter to become No. 1. Xiaomi and OPPO were ranked No. 4 and 5 respectively in global shipments, according to data released by Canalys last week.

Huawei Smartphone Shipments exceed Samsung to Rank No. 1 in Q2, says Canalys

Huawei's overseas shipments fell 27% in Q2. But it has grown to dominate its domestic market, boosting its Chinese shipments by 8% in Q2, and it now sells over 70% of its smartphones in the Chinese mainland.

"This is a remarkable result that few people would have predicted a year ago," said Canalys Senior Analyst Ben Stanton.

"If it wasn't for COVID-19, it wouldn't have happened. Huawei has taken full advantage of the Chinese economic recovery to reignite its smartphone business."

Samsung has a very small presence in China, with less than 1% market share, and has seen its core markets, such as Brazil, India, the United States and Europe, ravaged by outbreaks and subsequent lockdowns, Stanton said.

"Taking first place is very important for Huawei," said Canalys Analyst Mo Jia, adding that "It is desperate to showcase its brand strength to domestic consumers, component suppliers and developers."

It needs to convince them to invest, and will broadcast the message of its success far and wide in the coming months. But it will be hard for Huawei to maintain its lead in the long term, Jia noted.

Its major channel partners in key regions, such as Europe, are increasingly wary of ranging Huawei devices, taking on fewer models, and bringing in new brands to reduce risk. Strength in China alone will not be enough to sustain Huawei at the top once the global economy starts to recover, Jia said.

OnePlus Again becomes Top Vendor in India's Premium Smartphone Market

Solid build and design, larger battery capacity and higher refresh rate with impressive Android UI (OxygenOS 10) are some of the features which attracted consumers’ attention, the Counterpoint report said.

A strong community base with loyal customers is also one of the strengths of OnePlus which it has developed over the years, the report said.

Samsung slipped to the second position with a slight margin of less than 1%, capturing almost 29% share. The Galaxy A71 became its best-selling device and secured a spot in the top three models in the premium segment in Q2 2020.

Apple fell to the third spot in the premium shipment share during the quarter due to intensifying competition.

India’s smartphone shipments in the premium segment declined 32% year on year in the second quarter owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. A nationwide lockdown of almost 40 days led to almost zero shipments in April, which contributed to this decline.

Still, it was one of the least affected segments and reached its highest ever share in the overall India smartphone market, contributing more than 4% in total smartphone shipments.

While the OnePlus 8 witnessed strong demand in the premium segment, OnePlus 8 Pro captured the second spot in the ultra-premium segment (>$600).

India, China fight is stupid. Both countries should work towards the Asian century and make Indo-Pacific the centre of the world.

Why is it that the likes of Russia are preferred which is nothing but another invasive colonial power that took Asian lands while Asians fighting with each other? White worshiping is a mental disease in the east.

I recommend Oneplus.
It's my default Android phone brand now.
I have been using iPhone and Oneplus phone exclusively in these years.
