Hi

We literally have 1000s of platform in modern military but broadly broadly they can be grouped us:-

- Tanks
- Troop Carriers
- Artillery
- Multirole Jets
- Bombers
- Recon and Surveillance crafts
- Logistics and supply crafts
- Gunships
- Drones
- Destroyers
- Corvettes
- Frigates
- Logistics and supply vessels
- Amphibious and landing vessels
- Submarines
- Missiles and Rocketry (Conv and Nuclear)
- Satellites

Due to technological advances platforms are acquiring multirole capacities and there is lot of consolidation happening.

We are well aware that different countries have varying needs and hence answer will not be common denominator so I welcome replies specific to your country.

For example

- Prevalence of drones and advanced gunships combined with heavy surveillance capabilities will in future make armored thrusts via conventional tanks a thing of antiquity specially when you are talking about staged battles in Indo-Pak scenario around northern areas.

- We have already seen talks by many Pakistani posters about how deep strike missions via bombers and other jets in hand inside India are redundant due to SOW capability and presence of heavy anti air measures inside India

- There is a school of thought which says Aircrafts Carriers are wasteful means for India due to anti ship missile capabilities of China. This logic is even extended to US by some Chinese posters. While it may not be true today, there is no denying the fact that China can soon have such capability.

As it is said - Generals always prepare for yesterday's war so we see a huge reluctance by our forces to adapt and shake up their established systems. French realized too late about the follies of relying on Maginot Line, Japanese Battleships were useless against US aircrafts carriers and so on and so forth.

@Spectre NO platform is redundant

Every thing depends upon the theatre of operations

For instance A 10 was supposed to be out dated

But it is finding its use even today

That is not strictly correct. One can say every weapon has it's use as all of them will kill the enemy. Even airships, men on horses would kill the enemy but what we are looking here is the value offered - that is ration of kills/cost.

For eg F-35s can make in theory many different kinds of jets redundant as though they might offer superior capability in their niche field, cost is just not worth it.

In the India Pakistan context ; the Border is too lengthy and flat terrain is
too big and conducive for manuver warfare

I am not talking off deep Thrusts

Tanks can reach 50 km inside enemy territory in just one hour

So tanks will never be redundant ; On the contrary Cold start is about SPEED and shock action
for which Tanks are Best suited

In addition to Armoured thrusts ; Tanks also are used for flanking manuvers
and also as defensive weapons to stop enemy attacks

Like T 55 is an extreme good defensive weapon ; which we have transferred to our Infantry divisions and in future T 72 will be used as defensive weapons when we have sufficient number of T 90s

Helicopter Gunships cannot remain 24/ 7 in the air

They can be targetted by MANPADS and Air to Air missiles

As far as Bombers are concerned ; once AIr superiority is assured they are excellent weapons

There fore we are making Combat Hawks and also we have got AN 32 as Bombers

And now TU 22 is also coming

Stand off weapons are expensive compared to dumb bombs

Missiles are also limited and expensive

The Loiter time and range that we get from SU 30 is the Biggest asset
if Both sides have similar avionics ie similar radars and jammers

. .
Bombers like B-52 may be but not like SU-34. In fact role of Jets like SU-34 will grow in future.

Since B 52 is escorted by F 15 ; nobody will DARE to come near it

@Spectre

Reliability of a weapon system in Addition to ease of maintenance is a very strong point
as compared to just modern technology

HANGAR queens are useless

In war what matters is War time availability of a platform

A plane which can make THREE sorties a day will always be useful
rather than a Hangar queen

.
Soldiers are itself going to be redundant soon, atleast on the battlefield.

Age of UGV has come.

Interesting question, will have to think about it to come up with the redundant platforms.

As far as consolidation of platforms is, I have an expensive pitch for the Indian Army - Get rid of 7.62 x 39 mm and 5.56 x 45 calibers and move everything to 6.5 Grendel.

Pure bombers would be first to go because so many platforms incl. many
recon/surveillance ACs can be thus equipped.

In the specific case of nations without a naval projection force for the outside,
especially if their EEZ is small /fewer coasts, supply & logistics ships too.

The rest is pretty much useful everywhere.

Have a great day, Tay.

What about satellites and their role in phasing out conventional surveillance platforms. Right now the main thing is cost and availability preventing everywhere everytime coverage.
