When the Islamic State Saved 150,000 Jews - Ilm Feed

The Ottoman Caliph welcomes Jewish refugees on their arrival from Spain.

In July 1492, the new state of Spain expelled its Jewish and Muslim populations as part of the Spanish Inquisition. As a response, the Caliph of the Islamic state, Sultan Bayezid II, sent out the Ottoman Navy under the command of Admiral Kemal Reis to Spain in order to evacuate them safely to Ottoman lands. More than 150,000 Jewish refugees had sought refuge with the Ottoman Empire. The Sultan had sent out fermans (Imperial Edicts) throughout the Empire that the refugees were to be welcomed.

In his proclamation, the Sultan told the Jews that it was God’s command to take care of the descendants of the Prophets Abraham and Jacob, to see that they had food to eat and to take them under his protection. They should come and settle in Istanbul and live in peace in the shade of the fig tree where they could engage in free trade and own property.

Sultan Bayezid addressed a ferman to all the governors of his European provinces, ordering them not only to refrain from repelling the Spanish refugees, but to give them a friendly and welcome reception. He threatened all those who treated the Jews harshly or refused them admission into the Empire.

The Sultan ridiculed the conduct of Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castilian for expelling an entire class of people.

“You venture to call Ferdinand a wise ruler,” he said to his courtiers — “he who has impoverished his own country and enriched mine!”

Muslims have always welcomed Jews and protected them under their wings from Christians.........
Too bad, just too bad........ Jews proved them as backstabber once again.........

.
Jews were also given autonomous governments and their own laws. Jewish leaders would it directly sit next to the Caliphs. In the end; we saw how Jews repayed us.

Why do Pakistanis worry about the middle east? Its like the Chinese worrying about the native americans. Is it because you are all muslim? If thats the case can you see how the world sees how this may be a threat? Instead of a nation vs nation issue it becomes a religious issue. I don't see too many europeans worrying about christians in african being killed by x group and y group but lets not get too off topic. Just wanted to know what your thoughts are on why you feel like the middle east problem has anything to do with pakistan.

Repaid US? why is it US, your as far from them lands as I am...and really, jews were treated the same as christians, they were taxed, forbidden from selling/drinking alcohol/forbidden from studying the Quran etc etc.

It varied region by region of course BUT that was generally the "best" treatment jews and christians got, sure in some lands for brief periods of time in maybe the 13th century they were treated better by some regimes like the Ottomans because they were good merchants but in muslim lands jews and christians were both treated as second class citizens and the "best" time for Jews in muslim lands was ironi in muslim Spain where there was a golden age for jews and muslims but of course there was bad patches, like a few massacres here and there

Which was for reasons that people still use, the jooshad all the monies!!11!!11111

Sure, christians treated them the same and often worse but im neither and think all religions are based upon violence.

non-Muslims living Muslim lands only had to pay the Jizra

can you blame the Jews or Christians? having your land conquered by another power isn't fun.

if the American Indians weren't so throughly destroyed by wars and small pox they'd probably would of fought back for their land even til this day.

Of course there was persecution - it all depended on the sanity of the rulers - in many cases; Muslims them selves were persecuted. But these were brief and isolated and did not reflect off of our religion. When I say 'us' - I mean Muslims; we're one unit, one body - we share all victories and defeats - glories and history, humiliation and triumph. Sure we're going through hard times - but it is nothing compared to the times our Prophet and his companions had to go through.

Thats dangerous talk there. If all is one than you are escalating any small conflict to a broader conflict. In an age of thermonuclear weapons, escalation is the last thing you want to do because when the atom split, there won't be all or one.

1: Yes, non-Muslims had to pay Jizya; this was because Muslims had to pay Zakat - so Jizya was implemented for non-Muslims. The only difference is that Jizya goes to the state and Zakat goes to charity.

2: Where did Jews get their 'Judea' and ect... lands? It was given to them by god? Of course not - they conquered it and persecuted the natives (Canaanites, Eblaites, Mariotes, Mitanni and ect...) - these natives eventually integrated and eventually took on the identities of Arabs, learnt Arabic and converted to Islam.

3: And you say 'having land conquered by another power isnt fun' - we never conquered , we liberated. Jews and Christians fought alongside us against the Byzantines.

Let me quote this from a famous historian Baladhuri who witnessed the counter-invasion of the Byzantines - In which Muslims oddly won despite being massively outnumbered.

" When Harcalius, Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire, massed his troops against the Muslims, and the Muslims heard that they were coming to meet them, they refunded the tribute they had taken from the inhabitants of Hims, saying: "We are too busy to support and protect you. Take care of yourselves." But the people of the Hims replied: "We like your rule and justice far better than our former state of oppression and tyranny. We shall indeed with your help, repulse Heraclius' army from the city." The Jews rose and said: "We swear by the Torah, no governor of Heraclius shall enter Hims unless we are first vanquished and exhausted." Saying this, they closed and guarded the city gates. The Christians and Jews of cities that had capitulated did the same. When, by God's help, Heraclius's army was defeated and the Muslims won, they opened the gates of their cities, went out with singers and musicians, and paid the tribute."

interesting use of the phrase "Islamic State" not sure if this intentional or not

The Ottomans called their state by that name. Citizenship was "Muslim" for Muslims. The Caliph considered himself the Caliph of Islam to whom most outlying rulers like Hindustan owed allegiance. We used to offer the Friday Khutba in the name of this Caliph till Partition.

1.Successive Spanish regimes gradually increased the degree of repression on Muslims till one day they were given the ultimatum to either become Christian or leave or get killed. Meanwhile oppressive state laws had ensured that they forgot to read the Koran. In fact it was an offense to own one. They had forgotten how to pray because mosques had been shut down and Azaan forbidden. Although they had retained their faith, it was difficult to accept them as Muslims from superficial / outward appearance.

2. First they went to Morocco / N Africa from where they had initially moved into al Andalusia. Here they were turned down saying these refugees were not Muslim enough to claim refuge. Frustrated they moved to Turkey where the Sultan welcomed them with open arms. The Jews were also in this group.

3. Eventually many of these Moriscos and Jews set sail for S America. We can still find their roots from their names.

Yes Jizya for non Muslim and zakaat for Muslims. It is tax, the same Tax today you all are paying in form of Sales, GST and many others. Jizya is a very little or a amount both party agrees based on that Muslims protect them by any means and if they have harms by any means Muslim will pay them 100% of there loss in return.

Furthermore, if you pay jizya you are not required to join the army and if you are down on your luck then the state will give you compensation from the treasury. There's a reason that some of the Scandinavian countries named their welfare law Omar Law. It's named after our Khalifah Umar (ra). The man who established a system of child benefits, welfare.

But still Islam is evil and it says that we must take over the world and kill infidels :D :P
