When Islamic atheism thrived

some modernists say the concept of god arouse from the weakness of men, and now, this articles suggests other things that, one should believe in god, but not in prophets, some say please believe in god and quran but not sunnat.

The Islamic heritage, like its Christian counterpart, is made up of a huge body of commentaries and interpretations that were produced in various periods of history to address problems specific to their age. We need to remember that the Christian scriptures have not changed since the middle ages. It was in the name of these very texts that innumerable so-called heretics were burnt at the stake.

the basic difference between quran and bible is that, quran is declared to be the direct word of god, where as bible was written 100 years or so after jesus's death. bible has many authors in the first place forget the interpretations, as many islamic scholars have pointed out that the bible even today keeps changing, its the will of the christian clerics as to erase some verse which dont go parallel for the needs of the present age and to add some verse which were never written before.

to compare quran which has retained its original from from day one to the christian bible which keeps editing and new versions come out every now and then is high unjustified.

Although many of those thinkers, according to Badawi, did not attempt to disprove the existence of God, they lashed out against the notion of prophethood and argued against the privileged position occupied by the Prophet Muhammad and his followers.

the concept of oneness of god which was forgotten for many centuries was revived by prophet muhammad, and he was responsible to revive this faith, was how can a muslim accept one aspect of his teachings that to believe god is one and reject all other things like quran and sunnat?

the reason the author likes to write these words is that she doesnt want people to encourage to learn about islam rather, just sit back and be ignorant about it and reject every thing.

So many people have participated in this thread, but could anyone really define the term "Islamic Atheists" to me in a proper fashion, please?

Anyone who is an atheist would automatically become unIslamic, as per my understanding. So how actually did this term originate?

its like you may be born hindu but now you dont believe in god. when you fill govt form you still have to put hindu in religion column. similiarly about islam atheist

The term "islamic atheism" does not make sence, one cannot be atheist and muslim at the same time, bcz the fundamental belief of islam is belief in exsistent of one God, therefore the term "islamic atheism" is incongruous itself. Please stop misleading people and drop the word islamic. thank you

buddy did you not read my post you cannot associate your self with islam if you do not believe in one God.

i did.. what it may mean is just that these men were born into islam but later abandoned it to gain scientific knowledge.

He also believed that all human beings were equal in their intellectual capacities as they were in all other things.

Brain is a muscular organ……..more you use, better it will develop……..now, neither every single being on earth use it equally nor everyone has same “intellectual capacities.”……..Einstein was a genius, but in scientific philosophy……..Edison was a genius, but in inventions…….according to Al-Razi, both are same and both can think the same way, but as anyone can see this is not the case….…even the students of same class perform differently……offspring from same parents have different “intellectual capacities” and there are millions of minor daily example around to contradict this rationale.

It made no sense therefore that God should single out one individual from among them in order to reveal to him his divine wisdom and assign him the task of guiding other human beings.

I was a strong supporter of the philosophy that intellectuality, arguments and counter arguments with logic are the tools to change one’s views…..…but that was my thinking before joining this forum…….here I came across a bitter truth that I was wrong…...you simply cannot change the one’s view until or unless he/she him/herself not want it to be changed and we all have at least once experienced this phenomenon while debating each other right on this forum…..………yet alone prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) success in changing the views of Arab society who worship idols is not enough to confirm his divine wisdom….????

Al-Razi directed his most vehement attack against the holy books in general, including the Qur'an, because he saw them as illogical and self-contradictory.

As nothing specific mentioned, so I cannot comment on this except:

Dil behlanay ke liye yeh khayal acha hai….!!!!

Furthermore, he found that prophets' pronouncements and stories often contradicted those of other prophets. If their source was divine revelation as is claimed, their views would have been identical. The idea of a divinely-appointed mediator was therefore a myth.

And what un-identical he found…..????

@emo

Ibn ar-Rawandi and Al-Razi presented critiques’ of many ideas of Islam influenced by greek skepticisms. Both of these people suffer from what I call the pandora's box syndrome after reading some of their well researched works. Their entire strong facade of logic stands on the uncertain and blurred connection between the observer and the observed which itself is subjective in nature.

I do also object to the fear that reverberates in the heart of a believer which makes him run, leaps and connect to a spirit that makes him cry and pray forever without a reason.

For me its just all grand schizophrenia because what we call 'Free-thinking' is very limited. Yet we consider it infinite set of choices. It's all what's on our mind. Never, never in reality. And reality comes through comparison. We have absolutely nothing to compare it with.sadly the perpetual drama continues..

@ U-571

Hinduism is predominantly monotheistic and whatever they hold sacred its their business.

FYI I knew this and have thought about it many times actually it is kind of inspiration for me that how Allah has made a rock so important for billions of people around the world....... Its just matter of surrender when you surrender your will to someone that simply put hell lot of burden from your self now you don't have to choose you just have to accept.... and it makes your life easy and calm..... when you surrender your will then your responsibility just shifts from your self no more responsibilities just acceptance
I didn't get your point. Same can be said for Pagans? or for that matter any other faith...

I think the point Emogirl is trying to make in spite of the fact that some of the earlist scholals in Islamdom were, even by todays standards, "Free Thinkers" and posessing atheistic ideas, they were allowed to function and thrive. This reflected a very tolerant Muslim society.

Btw most of schollars were heavily influenced by greek philosophy, and it was only in the framework of this philosophy that they critisized religion. This meant that the ordinary people saw these only as philosophical arguments insted of any direct attck on relogion and hence the was no public backclash aginst these men.

first of all, the term used by writer i.e 'Islamic Atheism' is in no way defining a new set of ideas, writer is trying to explain that idea of atheism originated from Muslim thinkers of Middle Ages & that at that time non of these people were ever declared apostates & when you compare this realistic approach with Today's thinking adopted by Islamic Clerics you will see that even a slightest tilt towards such ideas will earn you a serious back lash
