Governor Banwarilal Purohit, I am angered and agitated. You didn't answer my questions, but you decided to patronisingly, and without my consent, pat on my cheek as a reply. To you, it might be a mark of appreciation, and a "grandfatherly" gesture, as you replied to several questions during the hour-long press conference on sexual allegations against you. But to me, it was an uninvited gesture as I wanted only answers and not a pat on my cheek.

It was a day of news reports on the professor Nirmala Devi issue. As a journalist, I too wrote on the politics and the controversies surrounding the case. And, when there was a press communique from the governor's office saying he will meet the press at 6 pm, I too set out with our Manorama TV crew to pose a few questions to Banwarilal Purohit on the issue.

I was sitting right on the first row throughout the press conference. I had three to four questions to him over allegations of sexual misconduct, and the reports over a home ministry enquiry against Banwarilal Purohit. To these, he replied with much anger, dubbing them, “nonsense and baseless allegation."

The press conference went on and there were so many questions on the allegations surrounding Raj Bhavan, and his excellency Governor Banwarilal Purohit himself. When a scribe asked him if he should appoint a committee when the professor, in her recorded audio conversation, drops his name, his face turned red, and all that he said was, “I haven't even seen her face."

During the entire press conference, it seemed that Banwarilal Purohit wanted to reiterate the fact that he is the highest authority of the state as per constitution. To questions on his authority to appoint the one-man committee under retired IAS officer R. Santhanam, he said he has acted as per the existing guidelines under Universities Act.

The press conference was almost over. And when he got up from his chair, a TV reporter quickly managed to grab his attention and asked him about how much progress he had in learning Tamil. Purohit had earlier spoke about his interest in learning the language. He was happy to answer the question. “Thamizh oru inimaiyana mozhi (Tamil is a very sweet language),” he said.

I was standing next to him. "Who is your Tamil teacher,” I asked him. Standing next to me was my friend Lavanya Natarajan of News 7, who also had the same question. Banwarilal Purohit didn't reply, but moved a step forward. My next question to him was the one that he had refuse to answer earlier. “Sir, you said you are satisfied with the government's performance. Are you satisfied when it comes to the performance of universities too,” I asked him.

He didn't hear me at all. Instead, he patted on my left cheek and got away. It was a crowded press conference, and I was transfixed for a moment by that gesture. Lavanya tried to console me.

I rushed to the washroom and washed my face several times. When I narrated my ordeal on Twitter, many trolled me. But there were many who supported me too. And I sincerely thank them.

I want to say, yes I am agitated. Many may ask me to dismiss the entire episode saying, 'may be, this was a pat of appreciation' or 'a grandfatherly gesture'. But to me, Banwarilal Purohit is the governor of a state, and I am a journalist whose responsibility is to ask the right questions. I expect answers, not a pat on my cheek.

An act like this moments after he dismissed a barrage of questions about allegations of sexual misconduct against him, to me, is unprofessional behaviour. And, it is completely uncalled for to touch a stranger—a woman—without her consent.

Journos Demand Apology From TN Governor For Patting Scribe’s Cheek

A press meet called by Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit after six months of him assuming office turned out to be quite controversial.

A senior journalist Lakshmi Subramanian had tweeted a picture of the Governor patting her cheek.

A collective of journalists in Chennai have prepared a petition to demand a formal apology from the Governor.

A male journalist, who was near Lakshmi when the incident took place, said he found the gesture creepy.

Some other journalists feel the picture shared on Twitter has diverted the attention from the real topics discussed during the press meet.

Other Controversial Moments During the Press Conference
Meanwhile, the press conference witnessed a lot of other controversial moments too.

Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit dismissed the allegation that he was being probed for sexual misconduct by the Union Home Ministry as “nonsense” and “baseless”.

He denied having any link with the professor who was arrested for allegedly making tacit requests for sexual favours from her students on behalf of officials of the Madurai Kamaraj University.

"I do not know the lady... I am above politics. Strict action will be taken if someone is found guilty. We will get to know only after an inquiry," Governor Purohit said.

He also said that he has not even seen the face of the suspended assistant professor, Nirmala Devi, who has been accused of ‘luring’ four girl students to extend sexual favours to senior university officials.

Governor Purohit had ordered a high-level inquiry into the matter by a retired IAS officer, R Santhanam. Once again, when he was quizzed as to why there were no women in a panel to discuss issues pertaining to women, he brushed aside the questions, saying Santhanam is a capable leader.

this news says something like past sexual allegations against this Hindi governor of Tamil Nadu. What was it? Rape? We should look into it.

Banwari Lal Purohit, the Governor of Tamil Nadu, may be in deep trouble. Centre has reportedly started to investigate his sexual misdemeanor. It is alleged that he is involved in a sex scandal.

As per reports emerging out in the Indian media, the Governor of a Southern state has been accused of asking for sexual favor from women staffs of the Governor house. It has also been learned that a sex CD or MMS has been made of this Governor.

The report didn’t mention the name of the Governor. However, it has been clearly mentioned that he belongs to a Southern state that is going through political volatility. As per Time of India report, this political situation has compelled the center to remain mum on the issue and investigate the entire episode in a hush hush manner.

However, if we take a look at a Southern state, what comes to our mind is Tamil Nadu. Political stability is there in Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. We are left with only Tamil Nadu.
So, it has been quite clear that reports emerging out in the Indian media are about Banwari Lal Purohit.
Obviously, it is not the first time when such an esteemed constitutional post has been misused by sexual perverts. We have seen the murky world of Narayan Dutt Tiwari and V. Shanamuganatham (Meghalaya).

Nirmala Devi Sex Scandal

The name of Governor also came into the explosive audio clip of Nirmala Devi. She is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Devanga Arts College. She tried to lure few girls for prostitution. When girls refused, she told her links.

Nirmala told girls that she is a close person of TN Governor and helps him find girls. Needless to say, this statement has opened a pandora's box and politicians have already started to demand removal of this Governor
