What's new

What's on your wrist?

You know a lot about watches my friend. Do you know anything about this?

Yes that is a variant of the Seiko 5 Day Date model 4219A. The "Glitter" Filigree Bezel tells me it was manufactured in the early to late 1970's. If you have kept the movement in good repair and it still has the micro rotator movement, it would be worth a decent amount on Ebay.

Interestingly the miyota movement by Seiko was also used in many of the cheaper Omega Sea masters of the 1970's and 1980's. :)

Classic Sekio's are very much in demand.

bah how boring, invest in a good time piece. I have a Molnija USSR era pilot watch I purchased from Camden flea market for £20 back in 1998. :). It still works brilliantly!

If you are a MAN, not 'man', you WILL wear a mechanical watch, either manual or auto wound. Unless you are a high performance athlete or a special ops operator on a mission, you will NOT have any electronics on your MANLY wrist. Does not matter if the movement is JPNese, Swiss, or Russian, you WILL have a mechanical movement watch on your MANLY wrist. You must pay respect to your engineering ancestors, going all the way back to the first man -- Ogg -- who started fire and gave push to civilization.

Finally, no MAN should wear bracelets. Medical necessity exempted, of course.

Which watch do you own? Are you a Timex kinda a guy? :)

Cheers mate, my dad gave it to me and I don’t know anything about it, he says he bought it from London in the late 80’s however it has English and Arabic days.

Yes Arabic dial was very common back in the 70's and 80's especially for export Seiko's because the major market outside Japan for Seiko's the middle east. Seiko's are very exceptional entry level mechanical watches, even the quartz movement watches used the same movement as Omega Sea Masters from the 70's and 80's, it's only after the 80's that Omega bought out the ETA movement design used in the Iconic James Bond Sea Master and aqua terra models.

USAF = Glycine.
Very nice, too niche for me. But quality case, movement and craftsmanship. :).

We’re British, we support our James Bond and Omega. Haha

Not many watches can claim to be the "FIRST WATCH TO BE WORN ON THE MOON" :).

I used to own one of these when i was young. Saving up $1500 was like saving up for a diamond ring - only - that i was going to gift it to myself :sarcastic:

GBA-400 is a bitch of a hardware to own. The watch connects to the tailored Gmix music player and wireless headsets. Basically you dont need to touch your cell phone, you can control the music by manipulating the watch controls.

Sacrilegious, g-shocks are the penultimate manly man’s Watch. Too big and chunky for me but they make great rugged watches.

What’s your taste in watches?

BTW you don't have to answer this question, but are you in Pakistan right now, I don't know anyone in the U.K that uses lace table runners anymore. That type of etiquette died out here in the 1960's :), but I have seen it a lot in Pakistan. That is the only reason I ask :).

Apologies if you feel I intruded.
I just reread the question and realised you wasn’t questioning about the wood, my bad.

They my friend are net curtains, we brought them from Pakistan... Just gives a little more privacy, harder to see through the window with the net curtains.

I’m not a big fan of lace table runners however my mother is... we’ve got one on our dining table... I hate it. :undecided:

Not that niche, really. I like the Glycine Airman model because it really is simple to read and to decipher the time zones in one glance.

As for the movement, do you have any idea how much these Swiss automatic movement cost?

It can be a little hard to swallow when a £5,000 watch is apparently carrying the same movement as your £350 beater. But explaining why is a story for another day.
You can buy the movement on fleabay. What ratchets up the cost of the watch are the myriad 'in-house' modifications, aka 'complications', as each house tries to outdo its competitors, then there are the near microscopic details like the uniformity of the paint on the hour markers, then the metal's grade, then the precision of the case, etc...
