brazil,australia and now sri-lanka !

Over one million people have been affected by heavy flooding in Sri Lanka.

The island is suffering similar problems to those blighting Australia and Brazil and so far 23 people have been killed.

The floods have been caused by unusually heavy rains that have lashed the country since 26 December.

The heavy rain and floods have also caused a large amount of damage to Sri Lanka's infrastructure, which is hampering the relief effort.

The disaster has destroyed nearly half a million acres of rice farming in the affected areas and the government has warned of food shortages to come.

The government has ordered more than 28,000 troops to help flood victims by rescuing those most in need and delivering food to others.

The floods bring with them the risk of deadly disease so delivering urgent medical supplies is another priority for the government and the relief effort.

More than 300 die in Brazil floods

More than 300 people have died and rescuers are searching for dozens more who are missing after heavy rains triggered mudslides in Brazil.

In the hardest-hit town of Teresopolis, 40 miles north of Rio de Janiero, where the civil defence agency said at least 146 people died, hundreds of family members crowded around the mountain town's morgue waiting to identify bodies.

More corpses were laid out on a street by the police station, covered by blankets. Rains hit the town overnight, though no new mudslides were reported.

Rescuers used heavy machinery, shovels and bare hands in attempts to find survivors.

At least 50 were still missing and one neighbourhood in Teresopolis had not been reached yet by authorities.

In a neighbouring town, firefighters rescued a 25-year-old man who held his six-month-old son for 15 hours until they were both pulled out alive. The man's wife and mother-in-law were feared dead.

Heavy rains and mudslides kill hundreds of people across Brazil each year, especially during the South American summer. The worst hit are the poor, whose rickety homes are often built on steep slopes with weak or no foundations.

The mountains saw 10 inches of rain fall in less than 24 hours. More rain, possibly heavy at times, is forecast through the weekend.

"There are so many disappeared - and so many that will probably never be found," said Angela Marina de Carvalho Silva, a resident of Teresopolis who feared she may have lost 15 relatives, including five nieces and nephews. "There was nothing we could do. It was hell," she said.

President Dilma Rousseff signed a measure on Wednesday sending 461 million US dollars (£295 million) to towns in Rio and Sao Paulo states damaged during the recent rains.

Officials in the Australian state of Queensland say at least 72 people are missing after flash floods which have already claimed eight lives.

A massive deluge overwhelmed Toowoomba, a city west of the state capital Brisbane, without warning.

Sandbags have been given out to residents of Brisbane, where the flooding may not peak until Wednesday.

State Premier Anna Bligh called the flash floods Queensland's "darkest hour" since the flood crisis began.

At least two of the dead were children, Ms Bligh said, and she warned that the death toll was likely to rise.

"The event that started in Toowoomba can only be described as a complete freak of nature, an extraordinary deluge that almost came out of nowhere," the Australian Broadcasting Corporation quoted Ms Bligh as saying.

"What we have here in Queensland tonight is a very grim and desperate situation."

Helicopters have joined the rescue operation to reach those trapped in cars and on the roofs of buildings.

Toowomba resident Charlie Green told the BBC he was stranded by the floods.

"It would be ironic if it wasn't so tragic," he said. "Toowoomba sits in the cradle of an extinct volcano about 2,000 feet (610m) above sea level, and we have just endured 10 years of drought, unable even to wash our cars with town water for the last several years.

"We are going to sit tight until we're sure that it's safe to move around. The flooded creeks are within a mile of our house so we can't get anywhere.

"We can't even get down the hill. We'll be stocking up on supplies from local shops."

The tropical storms began in November, triggering the worst flooding in the state in decades. Some 200,000 people have been affected across Queensland.

The flooding has been so widespread that while some communities are still bracing themselves for the worst, in others the clean-up is well under way.

The forecast is for more rain to come, and there are reports of flooding in neighbouring New South Wales.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has warned that the recovery will take a long time.

'No warning'

Police said a woman and had child died in Toowoomba when their car was washed away, and a man and a boy died after being swept from their house.

Toowoomba's mayor described the scale of the floods as "unbelievable'' and said the city was in shock.

Residents said the flash floods had devastated the town Mayor Peter Taylor said: ''It's a real disaster scene where I'm standing at the moment in Russell Street, Toowoomba. There's furniture and furnishings and it's just blown shops away.

''We have a railway line about 60 or 70 metres (230ft) suspended in mid-air and two cars that are virtually unrecognisable that have floated and smashed into the rail.''

Queensland Deputy Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said there had been many calls from people needing to be rescued and that emergency crews were struggling to cope.

"We've had multiple calls requesting urgent assistance from people caught in vehicles, caught on the street, caught in flood ways," he said.

"It is an evolving and obviously quite desperate situation for them," he said. "There has been no warning of this event."

This is some of the most violent and frightening flooding that Queensland has yet witnessed, says the BBC's correspondent in Australia, Nick Bryant.

One eyewitness said vehicles were being swept down streets.

"One car we did see come down with its lights on, it ended up crashing into one of the power poles and people were in it for quite a while before they were rescued," Deanna Ward told state broadcaster ABC.

Heavy rain has lashed the region for the last 36 hours, with 16cm (6in) falling in just one hour. Most of the rainwater hit an already saturated catchment.

The enduring floods in Queensland have washed away roads and railways, destroyed crops and brought the coal industry to a near standstill.

The state premier has estimated that the price of rebuilding homes, businesses and infrastructure, coupled with economic losses, could exceed A$5bn (£3bn).

Climate Change!

this this and this some more. you better believe it's real.

seems like every corner or the world is experiencing flood or drought conditions. and it's the poorer countries who pollute the least and have weak water work systems that suffer the most.

That's simple, We are destroying the world we live.

And the saddest part is that we are not doing it for Need but for Greed.

We are exploiting the earth so much that brings the climatic disorder.
Why the God created humans!!!!!
They are like cancer. Once infected to earth will last till earth dies.
Irony is that we say we are the best creation of God.:hitwall:

destruction will bring creation just like when the dinosaurs roamed the earth soon humans will be wiped out and new life emerge.

global warming is truth

How can we stop climate change?

I am sure USA and China are the biggest contributers currently in the world.

How can we stop climate change?

I am sure USA and China are the biggest contributers currently in the world.

all other nations want to stop it but the major players dont so we cant do nothing just face it:rolleyes:

China has overtaken USA now in country terms but USA is still no1 per person with the largest carbon footprint

Climate change alright. we got down to -15 centigrade last month here in Ireland!

IF the polar ice caps melt you can kiss goodbye to islands like Mauritius or Maldives and places like Bangladesh will be also in trouble.

One more reason - there is no god. God is supposed to be merciful, which he is not it seems. Hence there is no God.

I think some of the bizarre incidents have to do with the Icelandic volcano eruption in 09. Due to the global dimming caused by the volcanic ash global weather pattern has changed. But according to the documentary I saw, this will revert in a year or two.

Nothing is wrong with the earth.... Earth has existed since the time we were not even here. Its not earth we are screwed up. She is just self healing herself solving her problems also known as humans....
