What's new

What you will never see again if the Hindutva faction gets their way.

Yes. You seems to be Tamil?

Yup.

BTW, you are completely correct on ranga rao and savitri.

Greatest talented actors (I dare say in south cini field in general though shivaji ganesan from our side must get a mention here too imo) of all time for me regionally.

These folks of this caliber simply became the role they took on.... no other way to put it! Both depth and nuance was balanced in them.

In the olden days almost all movies were made in both Telugu and Tamil as the film industry was shared. I had watched many Sivaji Ganeshan movies. Shavukaru (Sowcar) Janaki is also a great actress.

You should see this movie.

Oh there are quite a few more on the list... sowcar janaki (mom is big fan of her along with savitri), muthuraman, NTR, MGR (i like more than my parents do), major sundarajjan, gemini (dad is big fan, mom doesnt like much), k r vijaya, padmini, vyjantimala (though my mom is not fan of her at all haha for some reason and also doesnt like saroja devi and jayalalitha).

...and of course the great manorama + nagesh comedy duo (folks are big fans of both along with Cho for the more comedy role).

There are many many more in that generation, even some not so great ones clicked quite well in certain movies ...and certain great ones had their off days and bad movies too.

As for Babu movie, yes of course haha....how can I forget that song by TMS "itho enthan deivam munnale"...the words tug the heart strings each time!

The great music of that era that really gave the soul to these movies lot of the time...cannot be forgotten. Giants like kannadasan, vaali, MSV etc etc and the wonderful A-tier singers of that time period that will really get me off topic now, so ill stop there haha.

Waiting for someone to start discussing Rajnikanth now...

He comes bit later haha, the 2nd generation somewhat along with Kamal Haasan.

Oh the unforgettable Padmini vs Vyjayatimala

Yes its why they are always mentioned together....they had that deep classical training in bharatanatyam (cant be found today in this generation).

My mom gives (begrudgingly) credit to vyjanthimala skill in this scene haha....going toe to toe with padmini...though she is glad padmini "won" (in her opinion) lol

This scene itself is big topic of debate in my extended family....some are quite the movie fanatics.

We had very good dancers. This is none other than Waheeda Rehman.

Talking about dance, this one of best dance songs

Don't club him with Kamalahasan, you Iyer intransigent.

See what I mean?

BTW, Kamalahasan is a trained Bharata Natyam dancer, fwiw.

There has never been a Muslim extremist faction here.

This is false equivalence.

I understand and sympathise with your need to establish a salience of Hindu extremism and stoic Muslim tolerance, but those that you say have never been here are today littered all over the forum, creating their own vicious little islands.

You may deny it as much as you please; it is your need, and I appreciate that it forms an important segment of your argument, and shall not dispute it with you.

In the last century.

There were stable govts before that.

ok. Since 1950s.
Zahir Shah ruled between 8 November 1933 to 17 July 1973. I would call it quite stable reign, he was also a moderniser albeit a slow one. It was actually Soviets who destabilised Afghanistan by supporting Afghan communists when they saw it moving towards Pakistan-American camp under Daud Khan and rest is history. So, in short it was stable till 1978.

Zahir Shah was a puppet monarch.

If his dynasty continued, Afghanistan would have been an American outpost in Central Asia.

Taliban was puppet of Pakistan and Saudis, destroyed infrastructure and forced radical Islamization. And can you back up your claims? He was living on the border of Soviet union surrounded by American-backed governments of Iran and Pakistan, he balanced it out well, much better than his successors.

Maybe as Naofumi said Zahir Shah was a slow modernizer but this time I agree with Afrazul that he was a puppet of the West. He was like King Idris of Libya.

What was America's problem if Afghanistan had become a socialist country and an ally of the USSR ?
