Fatwas are non-binding and can be changed at any time as circumstances change. Theoretically Atom bomb is not un-Islamic and is just a tool. It would be like saying automatic rifles are un-Islamic because they did not exist 1400 years ago, which is not right. Even Quran says that fight your enemies, the way they fight you. So if US is threatening Iran with nukes, it is completely Islamic for Iran to get the bomb, the same way when India threatened Pakistan with nukes, Pakistan got the bomb. Personally I think, nukes will never be used and they are just instruments of peace which prevent catastrophic conventional wars. If Iran had nukes in 1980, Saddam would have never attacked it. If Iraq or Libya had the bomb, US would never have attacked them. Nukes just prevent wars and Iran would be safe with them much more than without them. If Iran gets the nukes, then all options would not be on the table and US will only be able to talk to Iranians.

While I agree Iran could use ultimate deterrent (I know I would), but its not absolutely necessary. If conventional asymmetric defense can beat anyone's offense, and offense can inflict considerable damage, then same goal is achieved.

For example, Iran's current defense (inc. guerrilla warfare) should be good enough to outlast whole NATO full-scale attack. Considering extremely fast Iran's scientific advancement and stagnating West, every extra year increases Iran's capability considerably. If now war would be very bloody, 5-10 years from now Iran would be pretty much beyond attacks threat, even without nuclear weapons.

Bottom line: to build enough nuclear bombs + World-class ICBMs might take longer than reaching conventional defense/offense level beyond enemies attack capabilities. I dont know which path Iran embraced, but in the end security is achieved anyway.

Poor you, you clearly aren't educated enough that all lands have been taken by one or the other. Persian empire expanded and annexed land not previously theirs, same did your host country, that is why you are tolerated in the UK.
