I really really hate to read those "WILL" or "IF" from India and Vietnam reports ... usually it means nothing, they don't know what they do there, only left will or if for them.

Getting 23% larger over 10 years, but at what cost?

Independent labor unions will become a reality, people can now freely assemble,or even stage protests in the name of union strikes. And bound by TPP rule the VCP can’t do anything to stop them. We all know how easily that can get out of hand for a bunch of hothead viets.:D

Looks like the VCP made a deal with the devil in exchange for the economic benefits,I wish them best luck. Still it will be very interesting to see how the VCP is going to handle these challenges. @Viet @JaiMin @xesy

Yes, of course, strikes and protests are not rare in Vietnam, even before TPPs, communist party is going to collapse soon, i meant the VCP, happy right ?:D:tup::enjoy:. Vietnam on verge of become another Soviet, i feel sad really:cray::cray::cray:

There is a saying "Get it or regret it", i think VCP know they are the late comer in world economy so they know that they must grab every opportunities they got ? Nah, it is Deng that made a deal with evil first with Nixon in exchange for economic benefit, and VCP just follow step near 20 years later? GDP per capital of Vietnam in 1990's was $100/per head, same like China 1970's?

And this day, it is post-Cold War world already, no need to hold stupid view of the world base on ideology, you can be friends and partners with anyone as long as there is benefit:agree::agree::agree: and learn the best from them. That was called ad hoc alliance ?

Is ur avater skating shoes?

In the article
The country enjoys no freedom of the press, but foreign newspapers and magazines are available. So is the Internet, which includes information from everywhere about almost everything. That’s not enough—foreign newspapers and websites rarely cover local Vietnamese issues—but it’s also not nothing. At least people have a decent idea what’s going on beyond their borders, unlike the poor souls slaving away in North Korea with nary a clue.
Wtf is this, i guess author didn't realize the changes 2 years ago i guess

if you won’t screw with us, we won’t screw with you.
This is the same everywhere in the world.

“When corruption at the higher levels is mentioned by the press, the government in general is blamed rather than anyone in particular in the government.”
This is so true

“Bars are forced to close earlier in Hanoi,” he said. “There can be no entertainment here after midnight. In Saigon they can stay open 24/7. Here we have to go home and sleep. We can be out on the street after midnight, but we can’t gather together or the police will come and tell us to go home.”

“What’s that about?” I said.

“That’s what we call the capital law,” he said. “It’s only in Hanoi. We have to disband after midnight.”
This is bullshit, every shops must close after midnight, same in Ha Noi and Saigon except on weekends and holidays an area like tourists areas, business area and the city central, that are allow and registered to open 24/7, but better go home and sleep for work tmr. In Saigon and Ha Noi

Past few years, govt promote a lot of aspect related to NGOs and civil society on the press though

If South Korea is going to join TPP, she wouldn't have signed the FTA with China by taking risk of rejecting US's offer, actually US has asked South korea to join TPP many times, but South Korea still chose to sign FTA with China.

It is true. China pretty much begged the west so we can join the club, first after 1989 then later with the WTO,also CCP really gave up a lot like market and media monopoly, and turned a blind eye to the NGOs so they can freely infiltrate our society. But look at who is the beggar now, after 2008 it's the US who pretty much begged China to buy their bonds, not to mention China has been the provider of cheap goods to the west for decades.

I understand VCP‘s thinking,I just don’t see Vietnam holds as much bargaining chip as China does,so everyone who‘s not being naive will agree Democracy is their end game, maybe even the VCP has already agreed to it afaik...I think the most likely scenario is follow the model of Myanmar to make the process a peaceful one.

But for other things like privatization of SOEs to meet TPP standard is another story, and could be where VCP’s interest really lies. No doubt some will get filthy rich, some will get nothing and most people will be kept in the dark. Irony is these rich guys will later get elected by the people to legitimize their robbery and keep ruling the country.

Indonesia's Trade Minister Calls for TPP Membership in 2 Years

Jakarta. Indonesia's trade minister on Friday appealed for widespread support for the government's belated bid to join the US-led Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) within two years.

Tom Lembong said firms would continue to invest in Southeast Asia's largest economy as long as there was certainty that it would eventually be part of the TPP free trade agreement and conclude a similar pact with the European Union.

"If the government can give that, in 2-3 years we would have TPP and the European [agreement], they will keep on investing in Indonesia," he said.

But Lembong added that agriculture, industry and other ministries would have to overcome stiff resistance from "narrow interests" that would resist trade liberalization.

Twelve Pacific Rim countries earlier this week reached an agreement for the most ambitious trade pact in a generation, aiming to liberalize commerce in 40 percent of the world's economy.

Last month, Indonesia started preliminary talks with the European Union on a trade agreement. It will begin formal negotiations next January, said Bachrul Chairi, director general of international trade cooperation at the trade ministry.

"The EU and TPP have more or less the same threshold so when we're done with EU, we can get ourselves ready for TPP," Chairi said.

The Indonesian government was initially opposed to joining the TPP, but has changed its stance under President Joko Widodo, who took office in October last year.

It is not clear whether Indonesia has made a formal membership request to the TPP.

Widodo is scheduled to meet US President Barack Obama on Oct. 26 in his first presidential visit to Washington, during which he will discuss business and investment ties.

Ade Sudrajat, chairman of Indonesia's textile association, said the industry needs better access to US and EU markets in order to maintain market share in the face of competition from fellow textile producer Vietnam, which has a trade agreement with EU and is included in the TPP.
