Delhi: Rape capital of India?
(and this is india's capital)
According to figures released by police officials on the occasion of International Women’s Day, it has been revealed that till February 15 the capital has witnessed 70 cases of molestation and 45 cases of rapes. Last year there were 552 cases of molestation and 469 cases of rape.
Delhi Police officials, however, feel that it is too early to come to a conclusion over a period of just 45 days.
“But the statistics also reveal that since 2006 there has been a sharp decline in cases of rape in the city. The numbers in Delhi are pretty low as compared to other international cities. But obviously it is a matter of concern for us,” said a senior police officer.
Amulya Patnaik, joint commissioner (crime), says that it is basically a social problem in most cases the accused are well known with their victims.
“Rape is a social problem and can only be solved through proper counseling. This process should involve parents, teachers, counsellors and all law enforcing agencies,” he said.
Patnaik went on to add that Delhi Police is also encouraging girls and women’s to report even minor incidents like receiving a lewd call.
“This will helps us to check the accused and stop him from graduating from other serious crimes like molestation and rape,” he added.
Figures in the adjoining areas of the National Capital Region are also not encouraging. Ghaziabad cops said 129 cases were reported in 2009-10 (till February 15) while Noida have reported two molestation cases and four rape cases this year.
