What's new

What was Afghanistan like in the 50's?

Pakistan had Afghanistan for a good 10 years after Soviet withdrawl and all we did was tried to turn it into our backyard for future war with India.. Now Afghanistan will re-surge back with American help and this time they wont make a land claim to above mentioned areas but people of those areas especially KP, GB and Baluchistan will revolt against Pakistan to join Afghanistan..the cards have turned against us and we just just have to wait, see and count the hours....Unless we do something radical to re-surge Pakistan back, rescue its reputation and build the strongest economy and bilateral trade in the region which seems difficult as the time is short...extremely short indeed...

I can just say lol about the bold part. :lol:

Regardless, afghanistan was a secular and progressive society which believed in freedom. Women could wear as they liked and do as they pleased. It was completely destroyed due to the Taliban terrorist insurgency.

Afghanistan, no. Some small parts, were not bothered by the bigger parts which were as backward as today.

Not to sound like a extremist but maybe this modern(western) cultural is the reason for it's current situation in the first place.I mean women wearing skirts and showing their legs!(No offense to people outside my cultural or religious community)

People on this forum seem to think that a country's development is linked to how short a womens skirt is allowed to be in ones country.

I remember someone posting a simular thread about iran in the shah era (i.e american *** kissing era) and there were a load of girls in short skirts doing nothing in particular and almost everyone on this forum was commenting "wow look how advanced iran was" i was like :blink:

This is like one small group/area (not even all of Kabul) of Afghanistan, why not compare tribal areas?

Tribal areas of even Europe in 60's were also not much different to Afghan rural areas.

East Germany, Yugoslavia, Romania, Bulgaria....

What tribes are you referring to? A Tribal area usually means that the Federal government has little or no authority in that area.

Tribes died out in Europe long ago. I dont know about you, but I dont recall tribal warlords and tribal justice in Eastern Europe under the Soviet union.

Who mentioned warlords? the reference was in direction of development.

Pakistan is much to blame for the Afghan's state today, a reason why most Afghanistani people today hate pakistan. It is saddening to see how people here are defending Islamist terrorists who sent Afghanistan back to stone age during the civil war. Well, the amount of sympathy these terrorists around the world (Afghan, chechnya, iraq etc) have inside pakistan is surprising me.

They will only come to senses when they are blown up in a market or mosque by these terrorists. Only then, it would be too late. Almost every day, their fellow brothers are being blown up that way but still they would like to keep blind.

Anyway, US must ensure these terrorist rats are completely wiped out and the moral stature of Afghan people is restored to that of pre-1979. Poor country is the worst victim of Islamist terrorism

BS.

It was completely and utterly destroyed by the Soviet Invasion. Thank God USSR broke. It deserved it

Much of the infrastructure was destroyed and the country sent to stone age during the civil war that followed the invasion. Yes, USSR broke and Russia got rid of some laggards. Good.:azn:

Actually..Soviet union was not all that bad.. much of the development you see in photos is credited to soviet union..shall we say...janglee islamist terrorist destroyed progressive Afganistan..and now we are paying heavy price of our mis calculated deeds to please the forigen forces out of our own indian obessions..its no secret that Pakistan considered Afghanistan as its backyard for an edge against India..

Correct. USSR had no intention of occupying Afghanistan. It only entered there to quash down the insurgency that the Islamist terrorists started after the communist revolution in Afghanistan. Many developments were done directly or indirectly by USSR.

For pakistan, yes it's policy of acting as a pawn for foreign powers have cost it dearly up to today. An independent foreign policy like that of India would have been better.

Your just ranting again... It was because of the Soviet invasion. Allowing the Mullahs to become proxies of a Superpower. Not to mention the selling points the Mullahs were able to use and were given to fight the Soviets.

Soviets = Godless Bastards
Soviets = Communist
Soviets = More Infidel culture
Soviets = etc

The Afghan King(s) and P.M.(s) didnt have an open rebellion before the Soviets came. There were only small pockets of resistance from Mullahs.

Go back to your taliban hideout.

Coutryside of every country are "backward" in that sense. What matters here is that they were in the right direction.

I can understand your tendency of engaging in vulgar rant. Something which you'd not realize is, it shows that the society respects freedom, human rights and basic moral values. Which in turn, emphasizes it is heading towards the right direction.

And no, Islamist terrorism is no indicator of progress like you'd think.:no: Look where it got both pakistan and afghanistan today.

what is wrong with people like you? why do you always see things in black and white? did i say that terrorism is a sign of progress? Let me explain to you in simple terms. In islam you have 2 extremes. On the left side you have the person who is too lax, he dosent follow islam properly and allows things like women dressing with mini skirts in public and says that this is freedom e.c.t, then you have the other extreme - these are the guys on the right and compose of the terrorists like bin laden who blow things up.

A good Muslim takes the middle path - so your not extreme and neither are you too lax. Judging by your comments your on the lax side.

Don't teach others Islam. You don't have that authority neither the stature to do so. People like you will rather like to see suicide bombers blowing up everything. Oh how sad... US is cleaning them up.:woot:

@ S-19. The reason why Afghanistan is in the situation it is in today is because of Afghans and their irredentist policies which not only destablized their own country but also made sure that a potential ally in the South East through whom most of their trade went through was made an enemy.

Afghanistan and Central Asia: A Modern History - Martin McCauley - Google Books
Read from page page 11 onwards. It highlights that it was Afghan foreign policy rather than Pakistani which caused Afghan Pakistan ties to decrease so badly.

Only represents a small group of afghans.

afghanistan has been tribal (and continues to be tribal) for almost all its history.

So why can't a women wear what she wants to? Why should the government interfere in her manner of dress?

Yeah, you almost get a Madmen or a Pam Am feeling and atmosphere watching those pictures.But I have asked myself the same question: how representative are those photos out of the 50/60/70's from Afghanistan? Was it widespread or just a marginal phenomenon, only reserved for the elite in the big cities?
of course it wasn't widespread.

Afghanistan has huge cultural issues that it needs to sort out. I personally don't think the country can ever change as long as the northern and southern parts are together. There is too much tribalism and cultural differences. The northern shia majority and Persian speaking parts have a much brighter future then the rest of the country. Even today the most developed area is Herat (near the Iranian border) and they enjoy 24/7 electricity, paved roads and running water. These things are a luxury in the rest of the country. The taliban, a pashtun dominated group, will only hold back the North. Plus, in a country where tribe and sect matter above all else, there is no love between these two groups. They fight among themselves more than they fight foreigners so why not just seperate the regions and let each part do its own thing?

allows? What are you a mullah? Who are you to allow anybody anything?

Islam isn't wahabism or what mullahs dictate.

BS.

talk to most Afghans and they will curse and swear at the Soviets, but they will all tell you that the Soviets built a lot of infrastructure in Afghanistan.

I've heard this from many Afghans and every video I see from Afghanistan shows that (Soviet built tunnels, bridges etc...).

you're at the level of the boobquake mullah

If you think nudity is progress then Hungary should be a world super power with its nudity capital of Budapest.

On the flip side, if you think covering head to toe in Ninja attire is a sign of progress then I must say Saudis have been an utter failure too...

So your logic fails and its just another senseless rant of a mullah raver!

Islam does not live in female vagina or burqa or hijab! While modest dressing is a requirement under islam and the government has all right to enforce modest attire in public with in the norms of moderation. Not pushing everyone into a single dress code of ninja veil!

These cultural issued were deeply exploited by Taliban and their likes..like i said..a student of hate is only taught to exploit differences for the sake of hating, and he can turn his skills in any direction to pick up new issues..

Islam isn't wahabism or what mullahs dictate.

Mullahs are nobody to dictate..they are social rejects who could not excel on factual scientific education so they found refugee in institutions banning science and limiting learning to being a repetitive parrot only.

it proves that regardless of progress and development..people will never look to foreign interference and imperialism as positive...contradictory to the kind mentality our politicians are trying to build in our own country....almost all the highly qualified Afghans of today were educated in Soviet institutions. But on the flip side..
