So people before 1947 what was the nationality of your family. Note nationality and NOT your ethnic, religious, tribe, clan etc group. This is only for people from South Asia. Vote and then give explaination.

It is like asking people of Bangladesh, what was their nationality before 1971?

Bangladeshi or East Pakistani or Pakistani...lol.

I will definitely Do some wazifa tonight just to meet my great grandfather in dreams and tell him that @Indus Pakistan Has asked your nationality and sends regards...

It was simply -

British
There was no nationality “Pakistan” before 1947 except for a concept. So your poll itself is incorrect

The title of the state used in the passport was the "Indian Empire",[1] which covered Aden, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, and non French and Portuguese India.

Note:
  • Aden - part of present day Yemen which is supposedly in Middle East.
  • Burma - Myanmar
  • Pakistan
  • India

Out of all territories listed, Pakistan is closest culturally and civilizational-wise to Aden, Yemen.

Interestingly enough, Yemenis are very proud of their unique culture which has heavy Pakistani influence (over thousands of years.) Shawls of Yemenis are mostly from Pakistan, women (and lesser extent men) can be found wearing shalwar kameez/ firaaq/ jewelry/scarves, food and tea drinking culture also very close to Pakistanis.

Even today, Yemenis go crazy for Pakistani fashion, as they wear it in their own country as well.

The same can also be said for Oman, maybe moreso due to the Baloch element there.

Indian region was part of the Empire, so we were subjects of the Empire/King/Queen. Nationality comes from the concept of a nation-state. SO, I suppose there were no Indians before 1947 or other designations, we were subjects, not nationals.

If I bring emotions into it, for me, I was a Pakistani before the glint in my parent's eyes, before God created the earth, before time began. And, I shall remain a Pakistani till the end of time.

And this leads to another question - what was the nationality of these people BEFORE the British took over?

Had no nationality before 1947. Was introduced to the concept of nationality in 1947 by Iqbal and Jinnah.

Before 1947 we believed in cast rule and not nationality.

Had our own land state and fought both British and mughals and kept them away from our lands.

A nation lies in the heart of individuals. That is far more subtle and nuanced thing than any political expression of it.

But coming to the political side of it:

There was no mandate from any large majority of the subcontinent for British rule, forget "nationality/citizenship"...neither was it given by the British themselves (for rightful real fear of mass immigration) .

It is why the word used is British "subject" and "colony" not citizen or national or dominion (like in say Canada post 1867). Only with a constitution accepted and established by popular mandate (over time) is there citizenry and nationality.

Concept of BNO (british national overseas which I have experience with given my childhood in Hong Kong) was post colonial by far and relevant to small non-affectual populations and did not guarantee residence in Britain itself (this is key point in nuanced difference between national and citizen too).
