What's new

What makes India stand behind PM Modi, despite the demonetisation chaos?

I think modi can deliver for India, modi has not such case of corruption, he made beautiful gujrat and delivered there, and he made example for others. Modi should keep focus on economy and poverty , instead of making futile effort to isolate Pakistan.

Well we have to keep a check on terrorism- otherwise all the gain his govt. does will be in vain. We don't want another war with Pakistan and it is better we keep the terrorists from crossing the LOC and creating havoc in Kashmir.

.
Funny you say that. At least we can criticize our govt without getting shot in the head.
"We can, we could, we shall", rhetoric aren't gonna change shit. What happened to the demonetization with all the criticism? haha!

At least we can criticize our govt without getting shot in the head.

Really? Tell that to the families of the 63 Tamil martyrs who were shot and murdered by Indian army in 1965 because they participated in unarmed protest against Hindi imposition.

. .
Modi is now truly riding the Tiger.

People expect him to deliver and when he fall short of their expectations, they will turn against him.

A dangerous political game. Winner takes all, loser stands small.

Then you are not understanding the pulse of the people...Modi is not popular because he is great. Rather he is popular because, no one has any better idea for India than Modi...In public mind, he may be a devil, but he is far better devil to deal with than the worst ones...So the impact of the demonitization may be tough, but opposition did not provide any better alternative to stop corruption, hence, people will stand by Modi if also it fails. He will get benifit of doubt that at least Modi has tries where others did not.

.
Bad news. Indian hero killed himself due to demonitisation.

AGRA: Rakesh Chand (54) served in the CRPF, surviving a terror attack in Baramulla in Kashmir in 1990, during which he was shot five times. For the past week, Chand, a resident of Budhana village near here, had been visiting SBI's Tajganj branch every day to withdraw money for his medical treatment, but without success. Depressed, he shot himself at home on Saturday morning.

Chand, who retired as head constable in 2012, shot himself with his licenced handgun at his home. "My father urgently needed money for the treatment of his heart condition. He used to receive a monthly pension of Rs 15,000, of which he needed Rs 6,000-7,000 for doctor's visit and medicines," Chand's son Sushil Kumar said.

"He also wanted to start treatment for depression because for the past month he had been feeling low because of money problems. After repeatedly trying to withdraw money, he was forced to take his life." Sushil, an ex-serviceman himself, had taken voluntary retirement from BSF.

"He was shot in the chest five times during a terrorist attack on his unit at Baramulla in 1990. This had caused heart-related problems," he added. Chand's body has been sent for postmortem.

NEW DELHI: Maintaining that the quantum of kickbacks involved in AgustaWestland scam could not have been possible without knowledge of the political leadership of that time, the BJP on Saturday sought explanation from Congress VP Rahul Gandhi about who had accepted the bribe from the UPA governmement.

"It has been established that commission was paid in the deal. Rahul Gandhi speaks on all matters under the Sun. He should now make it clear who in the UPA government received the bribe," BJP spokesperson Shrikant Sharma said.

The BJP neta said in stead of taking about hypothetical and speculative earh-shattering disclosures, the Congress VP should speak about the realistic issues about which his party's role is under scanner.

"Congress can't run away from its accountability. It was a matter of country's security, which was compromised for cheap personal gains." Sharma added.

Rahul Gandhi had on Friday alleged that his speech in parliament will create tremors and scared BJP didn't allow him speak. "It was laughable that corruption cases that took place under the previous Congress government continue to make headlines even two-anda-half-years after it was voted out and BJP government took over," Sharma added.

You guys making fun of the chinese must realize that this is novel for them to see a government implementing controversial reforms and the public supporting them .
I was talking to a chinese interpreter in India some years back in 2014 before elections and they were struck by the noise and discussions on tv with all the dirt on the ruling goverment being broadcast regularly.
His wistful observation was that in China their leader is selected a long time before the change and people have no say in it.
Ofcourse i offered him all of our politicians free of cost.

pakistan is a sideshow in his scheme of things... he is constrained by right wing supporters not to approach pakistan... all he wants is avoid talking to pakistan, delay kashmir issue(by playing terrorism card) and focus on domestic issues.
Modi is not a person who will be happy with being 'business as usual' prime minister.. he is all about grands schems and grand gestures, he wants to be remembered by people...
problem is he cannot solve kashmir issue, so does not want to burn his hands by talking to pakistan in any meaningful way. If he could, he will be running after NS to solve it, and bask in glory.

.
No, he wont. Reasons being:-

(1) There is no opposition to him; and the namesake opposition he has is fundamentally discredited. Rahul being an imbecile is a running gag even in villages; Kejariwal has proven himself to be a bhaand (and a traitor too); Mamta, Mulayam, Lalu, and Mayawati are synonymous with corruption; Jayalalitah is dead and even undead, she was leaning towards BJP; Nitish is looking for an opportunity to return to NDA.

(2) Opposition has played their hand too early and in eyes of people ,came out as parties who are supporting black money and corrupt people. Had they waited to do their randi rona until the initial enthusiasm of people have worn off, they may have come out as genuinely concerned about hardship of people.

Thus even if this move fails, the guiding thought of people would be "At least he tried". BJP made this move as there were no circumstance in which they could come out worse than they go in.

With due respect this line of atleast he tried is not going to work...there have been a genuine hardships that people have gone through and going through...small business have been the worst hit and i am not even gonna talk about rural India...and these effects are going to last for some time...so slowly and surely people are turning red....now on top of that if they are told that all this is for nothing then surely there is going to be lot of anger and usually it comes out in form of votes...just look at your post...Kejriwal won 67 out of 70 seats in Delhi much after Modi became our PM....the same chap who are treated no less than a hero is now being termed as a bhaand by you...so once public perception takes a downhill then it is very difficult to get it back...now complement it with the fact that BJP got only 31% of vote share in 2014...In short a divided opposition was equally a factor in BJP victory as was people faith in Modi...Bihar has taught opposition a very good lesson and even the most pathetic morally possible alliance(Nitish and Lalu) won in Bihar...In short if Modi popularity takes in a beating then it is going to be very very difficult for BJP....so let me repeat again - Modi has to deliver..period!!

Aam Janta is just like you and me, their expectations won't be any different. There is no over night dumping in politics, weather its is Modi, Kejrival or Congress...
Agreed...that is why even after 2.5 years and without much tangible results to show his popularity is actually pretty much intact...however if you say that even for the next 2.5 years all we are going to get is efforts and no results then i am very much afraid things will start to slide...Keep in mind that BJP won by only 31% vote in 2014...A small dent is good enough to have devastating impact
