The cost of a M60T Tank came to us $ 4.5 million. The cost of the Leopard-2 Tanks we bought from Germany came to $ 1 million
( Although the cost of the project was determined as $290 million in 2000, the cost of the project has increased to $687 million )


but in 2002 ERDOGAN won election and in 2004 ERDOGAN has decided to develop national defense industry instead of $100 billion weapon sale and modernization with Israel and other under license production projects like Tank,Attack Helicopter,UCAV

led by ERDOGAN Turkish military projects have risen to almost 700 from 66 between 2002 and 2020
( Israel doesnt have 700 military projects )

TANK PROJECT
In the Tank project which will be the main contractor of the Turkish companies, Leopard-2 of Germany, LECREC of France, M1A1 ABRAMS of the US and OPLOT-M of Ukraine Tanks were tried, but the licensing company could not be selected
( even Turkish Army was planning to buy OPLOT-M Tank from Ukraine but withdrew from it in favor of developing the Altay Tank ..... and ALTAY Tank project was initiated in 2007 )


ATTACK HELICOPTER PROJECT
It was agreed in 2000 that the contract negotiations started with the American Bell Helicopter Textron company, and if the negotiations with Bell Helicopter Textron could not be achieved, then negotiations with the Russian Kamov and Israeli IAI firms

even Bell and Kamov firms named the Helicopter as ERDOGAN

T-129 ATAK project was initiated in 2007


UAV-UCAV
Within the scope of the project, it was planned to supply 7 operative and 2 strategic unmanned aerial systems. The main contractor of the program would be the domestic company (single company or consortium). The foreign company (single company or consortium) to be co-produced was determined as the subcontractor (foreign subcontractor) to the main contractor

But no any foreign company joined to the project
and TAI has developed ANKA UCAV without any foreign helping and the project was initiated in 2004


ALTAY, T129 ATAK , ANKA ,SOM and other hundreds of national military projects were initiated after the 2004 Defense Industry Enforcement Committee meeting led by ERDOGAN

I am no expert on Turkish politics or military spending but that M60 tank modernisation program with Israel was surely needed. There is a big difference between an M60T or "sabra" model than an old school M60A2 series.

I don't know about Turkish politics but I believe that military R&D in aviation was stepped up exponentially in 2001 or 2002.

I don't know about Turkish politics but I believe that military R&D in aviation was stepped up exponentially in 2001 or 2002.

It was killed in the 50s. It gradually started coming back since the 70s. The Turkish defence industry was bearing fruit in the 90s. However we really saw the results in the last decade or so.
