Dont want to be the party pooper -- but the Rajputs would eat you alive if you mentioned them in the same line as Jats and Gujjars...:P

I don't quote them in line but

It was the wording of ex PM V P Singh (Rajput himself)

He clubbed four castes and Named them AJGARs.(Ahir,Jat,Gujjar and Rajput)

So don't worry : Amar Singh could not survive with Mulayam , but Mulayam can

I've usually never been interested in my caste or by extension my ethnicity but this talk spanning so many pages has gotten me curious ! So Mr. Shearer please tell me something about the 'Buttts' !

You don't read wiki

Kshatriya community , Caste Devar or Mukkulathor (sub caste: MARAVAR(means Brave/fearless).

Except Brahmins, the other varnas are not that well defined in Tamil Nadu...I honestly think Thevars (not Devars) come under the same category as Kounders....Landowners/farmers.

Hey man then Suniel Shetty must be your distant relative. In Andhra also they are present but called setty as it means "trader" in telugu. Must be corruption of seth in hindi.

Hey u are the baniya Pakistani's always call all the Indians as man :P

 Yeah one could say that, But Chettiars are more diverse than the Northern Baniyas - there's 27 different sects in Chettiars depending on the Business they are known for right from gold smiths to educationists - colleges and schools - Chettiars are known for building lots of colleges down south. Shetty or Shettar is the coastal representatives of Chettiars.

Kamma-kapu divisions naaku correct ah telidhu babu...:P...Yes I've heard about that..but here we call all of them as Naidus and even they refer to themselves only that way. They are financially and socially a very influential caste in our area.

Bagane telugu artham avutunde meeku :P google translator vadara ?? True Naidu is added by lot just for social upliftment and yes here too they are very influential economically.

Now I understand why in Malayalam films, if a businessman from Karnataka is referred to , he is always a Shetty especially when it comes to dealing in 'spirit' and its Chettiar for TN.

'Spirit' as in liquor?? Shetty's are more into the restaurant business and mafia, Chettiar's are spread from TN to AP, to Karnataka, they are industrialists rather than typical baniyas in the north. Most of my sect is into textiles and machinery manufacturing.

Yup thats something to the effect of what the Grandpa told me ! We used to be Brahmins before someone down the line thought of becoming a Muslim and Bhat became Butt to distinguish the converts from those that decided to stay Vedic (or whatever the term ought to be) ! Apparently religion was a big issue even in a pluralistic place like Kashmir back then. Originally we're from a town called Khreu which is near the Hillside resort called Gulmarg which is again a few dozen kms from Srinagar but for all intents and purposes because we immigrated to what would become Pakistani Kashmir around a 100 or so years ago (Grandpa was born in Murree and he died last year at 93 so its safe to say that his Dad came here around a 100 years ago), we've pretty much indeginized to Punjab and we either speak Urdu or Punjabi as our mother-tongues with no one (not even Grandpa) being able to speak a word of Koshur - our ancestral tongue ! Consequently we consider ourselves more Punjabis then we ever can as Kashmiris !

Yeah either way you can call . Thevars belongs to martial race and they are rulers of ancient Tamilnadu but I don't want 2 go into that , just see recent examples.
