I heard this will be connected to both Cambodia and Vietnam as well..

Wonderful move. Now I can plan a month long trip..

Is it complete or is it still in patched? Is it wide enough to be labelled as expressway?

It would have been better if we could just extend the Uttarapath also know as the Grand Trunk road.

Objective seems to avoid Bangladesh due to its unstable political outlook.

OTOH the Road needs to be extend to Hanoi.
I dont think avoiding Bangladesh was the motive. It may be to utilize the existing road infrastructure in India to speed up the implementation

I dont think avoiding Bangladesh was the motive. It may be to utilize the existing road infrastructure in India to speed up the implementation

That is clearly one of the motive since a road through the plains and plateaus of Bangladesh will any-day cost less than a road through the Himalayan mountain ranges which it now takes.

The reason could very well be the high population density of BD, the unnecessary legal complication of having another country join it, the opportunity to offer connectivity to Indian N.E states, the political opposition from BD in the future, or just BD's reluctance to have a direct highway to Myanmar.

.
The road from nagaon in assam to moreh in Manipur is still a two lane road...I don believe it...also with the number of bands on national highway 39.

Bangladeshi bus rules
1. If less than half of your passengers are vomiting at any one time, you're not going fast enough.

2. Rickshaws, motorbikes, other buses, cars, animals and small children are a blight on gods green earth, and must be destroyed at all costs. 10 points for hitting any of the above

3. Horn

4. Suspension is for pussies, and maintenance is for girls.

5. Any object in front of you MUST be overtaken, regardless of oncoming traffic. It is your sworn obligation to god and country. Bonus points for blind corners.

6. More Horn

7. If you arrive at a blind corner and have somehow failed to find another vehicle to overtake, you are a disgrace to your country, your fellow bus drivers, your father, his father, Cox's Bazar, god, and all of humanity. Taking the corner on the wrong side of the road whilst loudly honking your horn is the least you can do to attempt redemption.

8. HORN!!!

9. Don't stop to let passengers on or off. Slow down slightly, and speed up just before they grab the door handle. You are a soldier in the war on obesity.

10. Horn.

Unstable or not (which is arguable) - it still is a better option for people in Kolkata and people in Eastern India. Uttarapath is out of the way for most people living in Lower Eastern and South-Eastern India. Unless you want to see Nagaland and the Seven sisters.

But people from Kolkata and Chittagong don't have to take the road through the rainy jungle which is out of commission half-the-year in any case. They can take coastal marine vessels to Ranong, Thailand's port (and resort) on the Bay of Bengal. Via Andaman if necessary.

http://www.reuters.com/article/bangladesh-thailand-trade-idUSL3N15O2HD

Even by a coastal tanker it is only 8 days sailing. With a fast catamaran cruiser this can be cut down to say 3 days or so (with stops at Sittwe and Thilawa (Yangon) ports in Myanmar. Nice vacation in the winter months. And Phuket, Krabi and Langkawi are only another day or so away.
