The Indian government has claimed that preventing infiltration and terrorism are the basis of the BSFs actions at the border, but this is utter nonsense
The Dhaka Tribune September 15, 2013
We are pleased that the BSF has decided to hold a new trial for the murder of Felani Khatun, as the original judgment, acquitting BSF Constable Amiya Ghosh, was, not to put too fine a point on it, a travesty. However, let us not delude ourselves about what is actually taking place at the Indo-Bangla border.
The point is that the Indian government has claimed that preventing infiltration and terrorism are the basis of the BSFs actions at the border, but this is utter nonsense.
The reality is that thousands of people cross the Indo-Bangla border everyday with the full complicity and, indeed, the full connivance of the BSF. Those who can pay a fee are allowed to cross safely. Those, however, who are unable to pay, or do not pay enough, are the ones who get shot.
Unfortunately, Felani and her father fell into the latter category. They were unable to pay, and hence Felani is dead.
This is what is happening at our border with India, a through-the-fence extortion racket run by the BSF, nothing more and nothing less.
Let us abandon the charade that these killings have anything to do with protecting Indias national security or the difficulties of policing the border.
BSF killings are a pay-for-play racket, and, as such, instituting a zero tolerance policy should be perfectly doable.
Meanwhile, let us not pretend that anything other than what is actually happening is taking place here.
To suggest otherwise insults us all.
