What's new

What is Belarus?

Interestingly 'Rus' in Belarus is pronounced the same way we say Rus (Roos) in Urdu. How did Rus end up becoming Russia in English?

Do Bengali farmers buy these tractors?

Yes they do. Farmers actually don't own tractors. There are service companies (rather people) who buy them and offer tilling and towing services to farmers.

Because of proximity and lower price - Indian tractors are quite popular in Bangladesh (Mahindra, Sonalika, Swaraj, HMT, Escort) however Pakistani tractors are recently becoming popular too, such as New Holland, Millat (Massey Ferguson) etc. Belarus is more expensive compared to Indian and Pakistani products but is placed at the higher end of the market.

But the mainstay of agricultural activity in Bangladesh is not Tractor, these are power tillers and machines (such as rotavators and rice reapers) based on Power tillers, because cultivation plots are much smaller than in Western countries. The acquisition cost is around Tk.25,000 (US$310 or so) with 50% govt. subsidy which is well within the buying capacity of most farmers.

These are imported but also an increasing portion is made locally.

Smaller Combined Harvesters are getting very popular in Bangladesh as well. Mainly Japanese and Korean brands are sold. I don't know if Belarus brand (MTZ- Minsk Tractor Zavod?) makes these products.
