Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Nalin Kohli on Monday questioned the Uttarakhand government’s move to announce a two-hour break for public employees belonging to Muslim community on Fridays for offering prayers. “What if Hindu community says it needs two-hour break for Shiv Puja on Monday or on Tuesday for lord Hanuman or on Sunday for Sun god,” news agency ANI quoted him as saying.
Kohli added the move showed Harish Rawat-led Congress government in the state was “willing to go to any limits for the sake of votes”.
On the other hand, defending the move, Uttarakhand Congress chief Kishore Upadhyay took a jibe at BJP and said “agar ye chunavi stunt hai to dekhiye Rs 1400 crore aur 800 tonne sona kha kar Ram mandir ban gaya.” (If this is an election stunt, then you can see how Ram temple has been built after eroding Rs 1400 crore and 800 tonne gold)
Upadhyay’s comment came in context of the Ram Temple agitation, which was spearheaded by BJP and supported by right-wing groups like RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal, to build a Ram temple in Ayodhya.
