Salam everybody,
The recent tri-aggression on Syria made me wonder about what does it take to counter or stop a long range sea based attack.

How to target ships/ submarines/ bombers firing 2000+ km cruise missiles, when the longest range anti ship missiles like Yakhont are 600km at most? Are ASBM/anti radar ballistic effective in real world?

How can moving sea/air attack sources be located from these distances? Are military satellites/vulnerable over horizon radars compulsory?

Finally, do you think Iran is cabable of countering a similar attack? Does Iran need to develop a 2000 km anti ship/anti radar ballistic missiles?

One way is by having long distance cruise missiles or anti ship missiles.

Another is to have your anti ship missiles launched on mobile platforms like planes and ships, which can reduce the distance between your attacker and you.

Finally submarines which can engage the enemy if they fire upon you.

Best way to counter cruise missile is to detect them from Airborn platform and take counter measures. If the missiles are subsonic, you can shoot them down if you have a potent BMD like , S 400, LRSAM some other systems like Arrow 2/3 or patriot. Most of your interceptor missiles shall be useless in case of missile like Brahmos or Yakhont. In that case you have to stop them from being launched. You can keep ships away from your target but 2000 km is a too long distance for most of the countres to keep ships away. Best way is to keep target guarded by QRSAMs.
