What do you think of cousin marriages ?

Yea that's why I said North India. South Indians need to ban it. What's your reasoning behind it? Why do you accept marrying people with the same guna as you?
its about money and 'safety' of the girl.. the logic is 'dowry money will be within extended family and the girl will marry somebody that parents have control over'.

Wow what terrible thinking. Is it a dying practice?

.
So what do you think of it ? bad genes?, inbred? disease? lower iq? smaller height? Pakistan should they introduce law and testing.

I vaguely remember reading that iran has introduced a program where you can do a test to find out if you and partner are to have healthy baby or not. I forgotten the name of this program. Anyone that knows could you please help.

From my observation most cousin marriages have children with eczema and slow motor skills. They fall ill easily, and have weak immune system.
Its true i have seen many many couples with disabled kids

not sure...
nobody will force you in south India(usually) but if you dont take charge of your life, your parents will.. and they will never have same criteria as you have to choose partners...
girls who have been brought up in a way that does not make them independent(no job, no idea of financial security/independence, somehow finish education, waiting to marry somebody and have kids) will do this, and they dont resist it much as they think on similar lines.

.
Medical disadvantages and abnormalities of cousin marriages is often exaggerated because people are not comfortable with cousin marriages( because of their personal religious or cultural beliefs). You may have slight extra risk of abnormalities if cousin marriages are going on in your family from generation after generation. I am not in favour of cousin marriages because it create mess in families i,e sometime matter between husband and wife extend further and relatives of girl and boy take side and then it becomes dispute of brother and sister also which bring unrest not just in relationship of husband and wife but all others relationships link with this

The answer is. No. No. No. Inbreeding reduces IQ. One of the obvious symptoms of low IQ is inability to understand the concept your trying to explain. You will have greater chance in explaining to your pet Alsatian.

Actually inbreeding can result in both positive and negative mutations in the offspring.
The chances of a negative impact is higher though.
The effect of inbreeding may not be visible immediately, and might pop up later in life,
or it can skip a generation.
Professional breeders use inbreeding to improve the characteristics of animals,
and plants, but for this to be successful, they have to prune off any offspring
that shows bad genes. An option not available for humans in a civilized world.

There is a reason cousin marriages is banned in many countries.

<joke>Inbreeding is not a problem, as long as it is kept within the family</joke>

apparently pakistanis have absurd level of abnormalities in UK.. british pakistanis account for 3 percent birth but 30 percent genetic disability...
the risk is slightly higher in each generation but if you continue for generations, there is higher chance that one of the kids will get it.

Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein are two abnormal people who got married to their cousins
their kids are not as good.. hence proved... ;)

The question is: How risky is it really to have a child with your cousin? The answer is: Not nearly as risky as so many other factors for which there is no legislation

The conditions that are of most concern in cousin couples are recessive conditions, where one defective gene is inherited from each parent. First cousins have a 1.5 to 3% increased risk of having a child with birth defects that are inherited. However, some couples may share no recessive traits, and would therefore have no increased risk.

More than four million women become pregnant in America each year, each with a 3% background risk of having a child with a birth defect. Out of those four million women, it is estimated that:

  • .1% (4,000) of those women are pregnant by a first cousin
As the charts above indicate, the health risk to unborn children of first cousins is very nominal, particularly when combined with such a low frequency of occurrence.
  • 1.1% (45,000) use cocaine
Cocaine use increases the odds of intrauterine growth retardation by 15%, and also significantly increase odds of premature or low birth weight babies and related health problems, stillbirths, and SIDS.
  • 2.9% (119,000) smoke marijuana
Marijuana use during pregnancy may reduce the size of the fetus and the birth weight, and related health problems. There is also a 10-fold increase in the risk of nonlymphoblastic leukemia in children whose mothers used marijuana before or during gestation. Marijuana may also increase the risk of chromosomal damage.
  • 18.8% (757,000) drink alcohol
Alcohol consumption during pregnancy increases the risk of birth defects by 9%. Additionally, one out of every 750 newborns are born with FAS(Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.)
  • 18-20% of pregnant women are in abusive relationships
Mothers who are in abusive relationships are four times more likely to miscarry, or to have low birth weight or premature babies, and related health problems.
  • 20.4% (820,000) smoke cigarettes
Cigarette smoking causes a 1.4 - 2.5% increase of low birth weight and related problems, learning disabilities, and cleft lip and/or palette.
  • 25% (1,000,000) are teenagers
Adolescent mothers are 2 to 6 times more likely to have a child with low birth weight or prematurity and its related problems, as well as infant mortality rate and SIDS. Teenagers are also at greater risk for anemia, blood pressure problems, and complicated deliveries.
  • Polydrug use during pregnancy
The NIDA National Pregnancy and Health Survey has uncovered a strong link between cigarette smoking and alcohol use and the use of illicit drugs in this population. Among those women who used both cigarettes and alcohol, more than 20 percent also used marijuana and 9.5 percent took cocaine. Conversely, of those women who said they had not used cigarettes or alcohol, only 0.2 percent smoked marijuana and 0.1 percent used cocaine. "This finding reinforces the need for health practitioners to monitor the status of both licit and illicit drug use during pregnancy," said NIDA director Dr. Leshner.
  • Pregnancy in women over 35 is on the rise
Mothers who are over 35 are thirty times more likely to have a child with Down's Syndrome. Pregnant women who are 40 or over are one hundred times more likely to give birth to a Down's Syndrome baby. Such chromosomal defects do not follow any hereditary pattern.
Clearly the evidence proves that legislation against first cousin marriages is an unnecessary measure of prevention. There are far more high risk lifestyles to be concerned with. We, as a society, make use of every opportunity to educate women and couples about how their lifestyle choices can affect their unborn children, while allowing them the freedom of choice. Do first cousins deserve any less consideration?

While the risk of birth defects is only very slight, it is still something that all first cousin couples should take into consideration. Genetic Counselors are able to determine the margin of risk for a couple by carefully examining the medical history of both sides of the family. In some cases, if a history of genetic disorder is revealed, blood tests can determine whether the couple actually carry the defective gene.

their kids are not as good.. hence proved... ;)
But they were too dumb to opt for something which is risky for the lives of their next generation ;)

most of these factors dont apply to pakistanis... how do you explain 30 percent of all genetic abnormalities are pakistani babies?
we are talking about uk not usa...
Genes were not discovered during Darwin(even though he made predictions without the knowledge of it, which is why he is geneous :) )... nor was it studied extensively during Einstein period.. for genetic defect. besides he was from different field, science is so vast, if you are in a different field from your expertise, your views dont matter as much.

True.

Professional breeders use inbreeding to improve the characteristics of animals,
That is controlled inbreeding where positive attributes are accentuated by further reproduction but negative attributes are erased - well you know how that is done. Not a option in human populations. Instead those negative attributes go on to multiply even more with devastating effects on the wider genetic health of the community.

I find bias in British studies when it comes anything do with paks. Years ago when I was at school most high scoring people were Pakistanis. One of them had hearing aids and now she works at the surgery for hearing department.

So you are attributing all this to cousin marriages ? So Indian and Bengali have no genetic abnormalities ?
Cousin marriages is also prevalent in Afghanistan and other Muslim countries

thats because asian focus on education, and wanting their kids to be doctor, lawyer etc...(professional jobs that needs education)... i am not saying genetic defects makes you dumb necessarily.

Zero genetic abnormality is impossible to achieve.. we can minimize it, by reducing whatever factors we know of... the ones you listed included..
since the factors you listed does not apply to pakistanis(no smoking, drinking, teenage pregnancy, drugs, over 35) ... we dont have much else to blame on.
The same study also says about arabs, but neither arabs nor afgans are big enough population to be considered a british study(i think, not sure). some arab countries have brought legislation to tackle this issue.
