What Did the U.S. Get for $2 Trillion in Afghanistan?

Smart people would ask: 'What did the US learned from Afghanistan?' And they worries for their countries.

Come on don't be so bitter. This is a genuine question.

After any investment the investor calculates the return.

From my perspective for you two who could have more diverging interests and opinions on this. I would say a few things we learned and history will tell us if it was worth it.

1. I would submit we did not go to Afghanistan to learn. We went there to show the world, as we have done so often in history, that America will go to the gates of hell to get you if you attack us, money is no object. Pearl harbor anyone?
2. We learned that Afghanistan is as they say, where empires go to die. But in our case, we got a foothold in China's backyard.
3. We had no choice when OBL sheltered in Afghanistan attacked us

What Pakistan, China, Russia and Iran need to do collectively is to hurt American interests in Afghanistan. This American shit show cannot go on any longer.

. . . .
so once again who armed and trained LTTE?

As far as I know, there was a time when the Indian government helped the LTTE a bit and when Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi stopped that help and sided with the Sri Lankan government, the LTTE felt betrayed and assassinated him.

As far as training LTTE is concerned, I have read in the book, By way of deception ( written by a former Mossad officer ), that at one time the Mossad trained the LTTE, the Sri Lankan special forces and the Indian special forces in the same area but without one knowing the other's presence.

My turn now. Who supported al-Qaeda and Taliban against the Afghanistan government of the 80s and early 90s ??

Sadly(being sensitive and diplomatic here), this is already happening. ESPECIALLY China, Russia and Iran have seen "opportunity"in the fact that the US is bogged down and unable to fix Afghanistan. I bet serious $$ Iran will crank up insurgent support in Afghanistan especially as retaliation for the sanctions. SO once again, America is forced to learn the hard way that every country has power and no one is completely disabled.

Mostly a transition of $2Tr of public monies to - again mostly - the US military industrial complex?

True if I remember correctly after the whole Iraq screwup Halliburton took the money around 20B earned from contracts and reincorporated in Kuwait to avoid paying taxes as well.

Lots of money to be made in war — it’s a time when the smart ones remove money from fools. Lol

Agreed that there's lots of $$ to be made in war, but the problem with this is the same problem with oil money- it only returns these huge financial benefits to a small sector of society. Money entering an economy is one thing, but its thats not good for the economy if it only benefits a small fraction of society..that creates financial inequality..

Forget money. US is sitting in the backyard of Iran,Russia and China. What a great view. Now that China & Russia are getting together why would US let go of it.

Also add Iran in Russia-Sino alliance.
