I like the original but there is a big tilt towards Metallica's version!

"Original" (they are technically both covers since its a much older folk song) gets it for me by a mile. Metallica sounds like your vanilla metallica song to me (love the sound of it though but it doesnt have the deep soul man). Thin lizzy captures that delicate rock sound of late 60s/early 70s till LZ and JP really changed the course of the river.

I do appreciate a ton of Metallica original songs though (slower pace, ramped up in their particular style).

Also appreciate you continuing the game!

Cover gets it for me in this instance....chord progression, Cash's own gravitas (from his own real story), overall tempo and i much prefer the overall delivery too....the emotion drastically changed too.
