Bengali peoples have been separated into two countries now for several generations. what are the similarities and differences between the two peoples across the border other than the obvious - religion. Are you still culturally the same people? Food, arts, movies, literature, poetry, dress, do you laugh at the same jokes? revere the same heroes? play the same sports?

There are a lot of Indian Bengalis and Bangladeshis on PDF and though they seem to enjoy and take every opportunity to fight with each other and insult each other, still it seems that they do have some kind of link and camaraderie under it all, unlike our western border.

Can you tell what are the similarities and what are the differences between Indian Bengalis and Bangladeshis.

Thanks

Here is some stuff I found on google

Similarities:

1. They all look same, dress same, love to eat fish and rice daily.

2. They speak Bangla (Bengali).

3. They both are considered lazy people and were once considered non-martial race by British rulers.

4. Bengalis can be fair but most Bengalis are dark to very dark on both sides.

5. They both love gossiping a lot and seem to have an opinion on every damn thing in the world.
Differences:

1. Although they speak in Bangla language their accent is very different from each other. A non-Bengali can easily identify who is Indian Bengali and who is Bangladeshi by observing their tongue but in India there are also a sizable number of Bengalis (Hindu, Muslim both) who speak in Bangladeshi accent who migrated from Bangladesh before, during or shortly after 1971 war to India.

2. Indian Bengalis are more into literary works, music, cinema. Bangladeshi Bengalis are more in politics, protests, rallies etc even though they also love music, cinema but Indian Bengalis have more passion for such things compared to Bangladeshis.

3. Bangladeshis love beef, Indian Bengalis are prohibited by religion not to eat beef. Indian Bengalis send their cows to Bangladesh through illegal channels but they never eat beef

I doubt a non-Bengali can tell the differences.

Well I can tell whether a person is from Kolkata, Rajshahi, Noakhali or old Dhaka when they talk, and that's about it!
Despite being a Bengali I can't identify anyone from any other region of WB or BD by their accent.

@nForce @Joe Shearer your opinion gents!

No, it won't.

You tell us what you think? Basically so far it looks like you are the same people both sides of the border.

A very well-acclimatised non-Bengali might be able to tell the broad difference in dialect between east and west; he or she certainly would not spot the south 24 Parganas dialect, or Medinipuri, or Birbhum or Bardhaman dialects, or the subtleties between Kolkata, Rajshahi, Noakhali and Dhaka, and the gross differences with Chatgaiyan of the whole lot put together.

For those subtleties one has to be a Bengali. But what worries me is that this kind of broad brush generalisation loses an enormous amount of social and cultural detail.

Perhaps after I have completed my paper I can get back to this.

Lets give you some example of wide spread difference between two Bengal

Though a Non-Bengali

The difference that i find between Dhaka & Calcutta are
dialect Bangladeshi Bengali's speak with a more rural accent ,while their Indian counterpart speak a more urbanized accent , Dhaka People are either rich, very rich or are downward poor (though now their is some assemble of a middle class) , contrary to this in Calcutta it is a much more balanced one , where you have rich ,then there is a very large number of middle class ,upper middle class & lower middle class & then poor (but not downward poor) , in Dhaka you have restaurant's a'lot of restaurant's but they are all very expensive & not for all , contrary to this , Calcutta has restaurant's but they are not that expensive & many can eat there , & then Calcutta has a very vibrant street food culture where , people both from an middle class familes to a poor's can eat & eat well ( Calcutta , after all is known as the city of joy ) Dhaka is obviously more clean no doubt about it , but with an tense atmosphere of stress , Calcutta on the other hand is not very clean in fact , its a bit on the dirty side , but the atmosphere is nonetheless one which is much more relaxing & comfortable , Roads in Calcutta are not very clean ,Roads in Dhaka on the contrary are cleaner but , Dhaka also has a very severe traffic jam problem , Calcutta also has a very vibrant night life for all ,be it middle class or lower middle class Calcutta hardly sleeps , don't know about Dhaka's night life though , so cant say
