Christians, Jews and Zoroastrians can practice their religions freely in Iran, beside their common representatives in Parliament, they vote to an extra representative for their religion in our Parliament too, this post-revolution law was made to make sure their voice can be heard in society.

Vast majority of Iranians living abroad are Athiests. So it won't be surprising if same is the case with locals still only 32 % identifying themselves as Muslims is big fat lie. In case of Sunnis even most liberal kind calls themselves as Muslims, although hardly any action of theirs is that of a Muslim.

Iranians are mostly non religious. I had an iranian join besides me in flight from qatar to UK. It was his first trip to UK and as soon as he landed, he got a ham sandwich. Mostly iranians are very liberal and anti religion.

Iranians in their majority are religious people. Despite the challenges Iran is facing in this area (like all developing countries), due to incessant propaganda and social engineering campaigns conducted by western regimes and their "civil society" / NGO extensions, in fact Iran still remains one of the more religious countries of the world, as shown by rigorous scientific studies.

Of course the percentage of less religious people will be significantly higher among those Iranians who emigrate, since it's precisely them who had previously been exposed the most to brainwashing by western-based satellite TV and the internet.

However Iran doesn't have a very large overseas community compared not only to Pakistan but even to developed countries like south Korea for example. In effect, there are less than 3 to 3.5 million Iranians - probably more like 2-2.5 million permanently staying abroad, vs 83 million living within the borders of their own country.

This estimate of mine is based on official stats released by respective countries of residence, as opposed to the politically biased figures claimed by exiled Iranian oppositionists and foreign propaganda sources. When you know that according to the Canadian government's official figures, there are some 215.000 people of Iranian descent there, to which one might add some 20.000 identifying as "Kurds" or other minorities in the census, and when you have an approximate idea of the proportions of Iranians emigrants in the different host countries accross the world, then you can easily deduce that the total number of Iranian emigrants cannot be higher than approx. 2-3 million. Same with Germany, which says that 145.000 Iranian citizens plus naturalized Germans with former Iranian citienship are residing in the country.

Another point is that religious Iranians, especially those living in the west, tend to be much more discreet than the less religious or even irreligious ones: they don't like to show off, they are extremely reserved socially speaking, are not that keen on making many new friends or engaging into random small talks with everyone around them, so you will not get to know them as easily as their less religious counterparts. Yet, they are far more numerous than the general impression would suggest. Take a look at the impressive crowd that gathered for Ashura in New York City of all places this year, in spite of the coronavirus issue, a significant portion of whom are Iranians - who'd have thought that there are this many religious Iranians in the US ready to travel to Manhattan for an Ashura rally? :

I wanted to get your insight into something. So recently this new online survey is making rounds on internet where it is claimed that only 40% of Iranians identify as Muslims and 60% are non-Muslims (Atheists, Christians, No Religion, Zoroastrians etc) in 2020

Do you guys think it is true? Most other surveys (like WVS, 2020) put Iranian identification with Islam at 90%. This is not talking about practicing Muslims....just talking about those who identify as Muslims (even if they are not conservatively practicing Islam). I looked into the organization (Gamaan) and this organization puts out surveys like these all the time. Last year they put out a survey saying 70% Iranians want secularism, and only 2% wanted Islamic Republic (28% was marked as "other/non"). I looked into who runs this organization---and the main 'researcher' is some Arab professor in Netherlands who isn't very friendly to Iran

It’s the same with us Afghans, the only group of people who I see to be actually religious en masse are Pakistanis, and Somalians/African Muslims.
